Great insight on this forum as always!

Simon
I have an idea:
- take old 861 (v2, v3 or v4)
- Remove all modules and drive
- insert everything new for HD

So it is a upgrade (re-use case and power supply)

Jaco's idea isn't as crazy as it sounds; a new case is around 1600 - so it should still be cheaper than a new one. smile

For the 800, you have to basically gut everything but the chassis and power supply to go with either High Definition optical solution.

You might be able to keep the component output card, but that's going to be about it.

Expounding on my previous:

The drive has to go.

The MPEG decoder has to be replaced with a newer unit that has MPEG2/MPEG4(AVC/H.264)/VC-1.

The navigation subsystem has to be rewritten.

The scaling subsystem likely has to be replaced as it is optimized around 480i processing.

The HDMI outputs would have to be replaced as they are 1.1, and they are going to want to go with 1.3.

It is likely the audio processing has to be upgraded to handle the requirements for Dolby Digital +, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD.

The component outputs mught be able to stay, but I doubt that's worth considering.

Cheers,

James:

I didn't say that at all, and the decision is not mine to make - that is up to Meridian. It's one I am glad I don't have to make!

Jaco's earlier point, that the case itself is rather expensive is worth considering.

Cheers,

John,

perhaps you take me a little too seriously.... i was only suggesting your comments were inclined towards the negative rather than being an imperative no!

i, for one would love Meridian to confirm anything right now on their future developments!!

They won't, as they can't.

That's a bit like giving your (US) football opponent your playbook. In other words, it isn't going to happen.

Sorry, but I don't think the drive has to go...one major interest of the 800 is his second drive bay and internal volume, wich means once it wil be upgraded for the new formats it'll make it a real multi format SD/HD player...I hope!

It would be nice to have both a HD-DVD and a blu-ray drive in there indeed. That would make it even more a super disc player.

Both HD-DVD and blu-ray drives are backwards compatible with DVD and (I think) CD. I'm not sure what value keeping the original drive would hold.

Sorry, my mistake (I think), so one drive HDDVD/BD/DVD/DVDA/CD and one for...SACD smile

Joke apart we'll see if multiplying the format compatibility does not compromise some of these format playback, as it's often the case with "standard" DVD player.
Once we're here, does someone know what was M thinking with the 2nd 800 drive emplacement?

juno
