I don't think there are drives that can do BR AND HDDVD (yet).

Chris,

What I have heard from the CE manufacturers is that Blu-ray players are going to have two laser assemblies so that they can play back all 3 generations of media.

Cheers,

Happy to be corrected.

Not that our beloved industry doesn't have the ability to shoot themselves in the foot (they've done it before), but not having DVD backwards compatibilty in a Bluray player would be a particularly large bullet!

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are blue laser based and as such are, by themselves, incompatible with present day red laser DVD; however each format's consortium requires all players to be compatible by implementing a separate red laser within the player; so players of both formats are backward compatible to the end-user;

Be aware however that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are incompatible formats to each other at the disk format (pit) level (that's how Blu-Ray exceeds HD-DVD storage capacity); so universal drives that support both formats are prohibitively expensive, requiring 2 completely seperate drives (despite the fact that the format processing chips being manufactured support both formats at the data level); In addition, each consortium has stated they will disallow manufactures to license both within the same machine (for now);

The insanity of these people just goes on and on.

Given that my pc has 2 disc drives at virtually no extra cost, the hi-fi makers could easily construct such a thing. That the format licence holders would prohibit such a move, albeit "for now", makes me all the more determined to watch them fall whilst I'm listening to my CD's.

I've never downloaded a track...ever. But, if they are trying to make their potential HD consumer base move away from silver discs altogether, then it's the right way to go.

Rgds,
Nick

The backwards compatibility of HD-DVD is more on the manufacturing side, there's less rebuilding work/cost for them since the basic disc format is similar.

Nick-
Couldn't agree more; in fact one manufacturer had announced plans to make a universal player; then recanted when they were shut down by the consortiums; now they're just saying - maybe in the future.... what a world!!!

tommy - good point - HD-DVD should be a bit cheaper due to the similar disc format....
