Why? Because you can't know the amount of processing required without knowing the specifics of the codec. They do have a tremendous advantage when it comes to Dolby TrueHD, but with DTS-HD they're pretty level on the playing field.
***** True - can't know the precise amount; but M- knows more than enough to bound it; and if it's too close to call, architect for more to be added later; after all, the G- series was introduced because of this problem with preceeding models in first place;
I just don't see a good way for M- to squirm out of not seeing this coming; by having an obsolete processor due to digital formats only 3 years into the line - not given the depth of knowledge, reputation and marketing position of upgradeability, designe against obsolescence and pricing structure; They already went through a recent battle with the market on this regarding the G- series introduction; to have this happen again, so soon would be hurtful to M- market share I believe;
Again - to your point, my expectations are probably unrealistic for my own good --- perhaps I'll be forced to lower them --- But for now, I'm still expecting M- to come through with a good solution based on superior forethought, design and technical awareness; We should know sometime this year I suppose..... *****

I mean what on earth did M think they could have offered by way of hardware upgrades? Exactly. Hardware upgradeablity is a selling point because it implies the ability to accomodate new (or at least next gen.) formats/connections as they arise. The coming hi-res formats fall under the umbrella of 'hardware upgradeable' to my mind. It was a factor in my buying decision. Might have tried to stretch for an 861 or gone another direction entirely if I knew the G68 to be a dead end. We'll see. Sure wish Lex. sounded better for music! When they say upgradeable or upgrade program, they mean it.

It was also a factor in mine. I also exchanged e-mails with people at M and it seemed clear to me that my product could have been updated to HDMI.

Calm down fellas.... it's a bit early to be digging out your brochures ready for the lawsuit Which facts are you chaps basing your frustrations on ? M hasn't said what will/won't be offered as an upgrade as far as I can see. The only one they have said would be unlikely or very expensive was the DAB conversion. If you actually look at M's responses (and bear in mind that JK checked the wording with M before publishing here) you can see nowhere that an HDMI upgrade is not possible. Quite the contrary I'd say For example: Meridian Response: HDMI would be the appropriate solution for the next gen HD discs, not a proprietary solution. MHR SmartLink was the appropriate solution for DVD-A as Firewire wasn't an acceptable solution, but not in this case. There is no timeframe at this point for HDMI 1.3 as even sample silicon is not shipping. To me this says that there will be a solution as soon as they can get their hands on the right chips, work up the solution and cost it out. Anyone remember the 568.2mm upgrade New DSP chips etc based on the 861v3....sound familiar? Maybe a new panel section for the sockets? Who knows? Meridian Response: Seperating audio and video won't really make a difference at this level. There is no benefit to seperating video from audio with HDMI. Interesting...there is no benefit.... This implies that they are at least working up the principles. We've been around this one before and suggest waiting until we know what's possible/available.
Rgds, Nick

Well, I suppose in retrospect, an expansion slot on the back of G68 would have been a good idea. On balance, though, I agree that it is not yet time to get outraged since we do not know whether there will be an upgrade or not.
Meridian is not stupid, they know what was written into the G68 brochure and that a whole bunch of their customers will be pretty unhappy if G68 proves to be at a dead-end. Given their upgrade policy in the past (I had 565 upgraded twice; 568 once) I would wager that there will be an upgrade to G68. Only time will tell for sure!

Well. One thing's for sure. If M are reading this, they'll know they have a fairly strong market of hitchers for an upgrade!

any point in a quick straw poll amongst all of us in terms of interest on this forum? i mean if we represent 1% of their market it could prove worthwhile for them.............
At least it will give an idea of our commitment to the brand!

I was tempted to "come out" as a custom installer and claim all of my clients are clamouring for an upgrade.

The upgrade path was about 75% of the reason I got my 861. The same applies (although perhaps slightly less) to me likely choosing an 800 player in the future (undecided on new or 2nd hand).
Wonder if Meridian would do an Audiocom type upgrade to a new 800 and hence get a proper warranty?

I am, again, considering upgrading to the 861 (depends a bit on being able to move my G68AXV) - perhaps upgradeability will push me over!!! Does anyone have some insight around upgradeability to 800? If, for example, one bought the current version of 800 today, would it be upgradeable to Bluray, or is it more likely that M releases a completely new 800-series player? Great insight on this forum as always! Simon
