I received this reply from Meridian.

The 558 has plastic
bungs in the ends of the terminals. These can be removed by partially
screwing in a self tapping screw then pulling out. It is then possible to
connect your banana plugs into the ends of the terminal.

I did not realise the plastic bungs could be removed allowing the banana plugs to be fitted into the ends of the terminal.
