Hi Gents
596 results:
After 90 minutes of viewing (Sith), I'd concur with markqv in that colour, contrast and sharpness are all improved. I'm using the same picture adjustments as with the 963, and they may need more tweaking, but it is a definite improvement. I did get a fright on initial impressions though...it looked pants for the first 20 minutes or so. It has improved over the 90 minutes, but I can confirm that the Philips still has the superior picture. Ah, better picture or better sound...which to choose?
One down side, the component output is badly affected by a heavy covering of random green horizontal interference bars...completely unusable. Don't know yet if this is retrievable; I know that CRTprojectors have a disclaimer when fitting SDI mods that the original component output can be rendered unusable.
Thanks to Duncan for the leads though, it was a straightforward fit. Opening the 596 for the first time, I'm quite impressed at how much is packed into the case...being a Scot, I feel I got my money's worth in there!
Cheers
George

Hi George,
I spent some time yesterday with Duncs looking at his 598 SDI feeding SDI, component and composite into a 50" panel.
It was very interesting indeed. The PQ was in the order that you would expect and all formats worked with no apparant issues.
The SDI feed produced the image with least visible noise, better edges, better definition, better colours and skin tones etc.
Cheers
PS...thanks again Duncs !!
Rgds, Nick

Just discovered that the BT656 SDI board which we are all using on this mod is actually manufactured by the Crystallio scaler company...PMS Video. Cool!
Cheers

Strange to say but I have noticed the same difference as Markqv regarding the Meridian Logo quality in NTSC vs PAL.
This has been apparent on both my old 596 and on the G98 on my projector. The sharpness and stability in PAL don't seem to be as good as NTSC. I generally get R1 NTSC discs anyway so I am not particularly concerned.

Duncan,
Are you shipping to the States too? If not would it be possible to get the pinouts so I can make some up on my own?
Thanks.

Nevermind, Duncan. I just saw your other post. I got the pinouts from your website. Thanks for putting it together.

I assume a cable is not included with the SDI card. What SDI cable have people gone for? The Belden or the (pink!) Liberty Interflex? Edit: Or even the Mark Grant Belden/Canare option: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101717

Joel
I use a 3 metre Liberty cable from CRT projectors.
Just for a laugh I purchased two BNC connectors and a 3 metre piece of 75 Ohm coax from Maplin for the grand total of 6.00 and made up my own lead.
I can't detect any PQ difference between them!
