All,

Following popular demand I have completed a batch of cables to add a SDI output board to your 596/598 DVD Player. This means no soldering or drilling!!

You will still need to buy the board separately from here:
http://www.crtprojectors.co.uk/sdi_dvd.htm

Near the bottom of the page (SDI Pro Modification Kit for BT656) and it is 109.00 including VAT & delivery.

The completed cable is shown on these two links and are of a much better quality than my original prototype.

http://www.rolfe.co.uk/sdi2.jpg

The price for the cable (to really only cover the cost of components, my time and testing) is: 35 including P&P to the UK (Please add 1 if using Paypal & 5 if outside of the UK)

I will accept payment via Paypal, Post (cheque and recorder delivery cash), Bank transfer to Lloyds or in person.

Please send paypal payments to Duncan at rolfe.co.uk or email me on this for address/bank details.

Extra: I will be happy install the upgrade for anyone who wishes to bring their DVD player to me - I also have 1 of the SDI Boards from CRT spare - email for details.

Thanks
Duncan

Do you still have the extra SDI board?
I'm interested in buying the whole kit.

Hey Duncan,

Thats great news. I've sent the dough off to you via PayPal a few minutes ago. Please just ship via airmail.

Just to make absolutely certain. When you had a look at the Moome site, the SDI board pinouts are identical to the boards you last used? If the Moome board is up to snuff, then it is a better deal than the SDI mod boards you are buying locally.

Thanks again. I look forward to comparing an all digital video path through our DVDO HD+ to the component feed we've been using to date.

Happy Trails!

Hi Duncs

Cables arrived this morning - fantastic job!
Thanks very much for your help with these - if you hadn't made them up I suspect my SDI card would still be in its box this time next year.

Once I've found my Stanley hatchet to open up the 598 case and installed all the bits, I will post my impressions of the 598 SDI/Crystalio/Sony KD combination.

Once again, many thanks.

Regards

Mark

Any of your cables still going?

If so I'll take one, just forward me your paypal details.

Then it will be out with the plastic to order the output board from CRT & input board for the Iscan.
Anyone know of a good source for the DVDO board?

Crossed fingers that I'm not person 11

Thanks
Ian

Hi Duncs-598-Modders

As soon as I arrived home it was out with the Torx-driver. The cables and SDI card were installed in about 10 minutes, with the most difficult part of the job being the careful removal of the blanking plug from the back panel of the 598!

As soon as I fired-up the 598 and Crystalio it was immediatley evident from the 598 logo screen that the image was sharper. Stangely that was when the Crystalio was detecting a seemingly default NTSC signal on start-up. When a PAL disc was subsequently inserted, played and removed the 598 logo sreen was somewhat blurred. Anyone any ideas as to this quirk?

Regardless of the logo screen issue, there's a noticeable improvement in picture quality - most definitely sharper and with the colours seemingly more vibrant.

When the 598 is switched off, the logo screen remains on-screen as long as the Crystalio is powered-up. Presumably the SDI card (and other existing 598 components?) remain in a powered-up state enabling the logo screen stored in ROM being output to the Crystalio.

Aside from the noted quirks, I'm delighted with the SDI mod to the 598 - it has produced a marked improvement in picture quality.

Thanks again to Duncs for the leads!
