I've just purchased the DSP 5200 and matching center. What is the s patch and do I need it to operate the speakers? I want to connect to the g68j and the g98. Please advise.

The 511 is a slave patch unit which lets you hook up more than 1 pair of DSP loudspeakers to a Meridian system.

It's quite small (I just hooked one up) and you can even hide it away.

Assuming you want to use the Center as the master (as recommended) following the instructions in the DSP loudspeaker handbook.

The quick diagram looks like this:

M-Lead from Processor to CC Comms Input.
S-Lead from CC Comms output to 511 Slave Patch
S-Lead from 511 Slave patch to Left Comms Input
S-Lead from Left Comms Output to Right Comms Input.

As an FYI, you can put the 511 slave patch box just about anywhere, and putting it near the loudspeakers allows you to minimize the length of the S-leads.

Hope this helped.

Best,

You can often avoid the use of the 511 patch by diasy chaining the comms leads from each speaker.

The advantage of the patch box is that it is a single hub where all comms leads can orignate from so can be placed near the source where the audio leads also originate from. The 565 actually had a patch box built in.

In a 2-ch system it is not required, in a 3-ch system it is often avoided. With surround speakers though it may be more useful.

The g68 user guide has a good diagram on page 14. User Guide

Assuming that you only have 3 DSPs and that you want to use the centre as master, the Slead(COMMs part) to the front mains(LR) needs to be connected to the centre output somehow but the Slead(Digital part) to the LR needs to be connected to the g68. If the centre and G68 are close you could connect the S lead to these directly, otherwise you employ the patch near the g68 and use another S lead to link from patch to centre as shown in the diagram.

If you have more DSP's, then you really need to use the patch. It is best placed somewhere near the processor as each additional pair of DSPs will have to connect to the g68 processor and the patch. smile

This is how I connect my comm.`s.

From G68 to Centre Master with ‘M Lead` from Centre Master to front Left with ‘S Lead` from front left to front Right with ‘S Lead` from front Right to rear Right with ‘S Lead` from rear Right to rear Left with ‘S Lead`

I split the leads supplied by Meridian down the middle separating the Digital side from the Comm.`s side, this way you can run the cables in different routes if necessary.

Cheers

Mike

I do the same thing, I spit the cables, that way I have a daisy chain of COMM`s starting at the center and connecting all speakers and G68. The audio coax is like the diagram. I have a G68 and five speakers and I do not have a 511.

You don't have to have a 511, but IMO, it makes your life easier.

Cheers,

I can see that splitting the leads avoids the need for the patch box.

The puritan in me finds it a bit disturbing that the COMMs are arranged in a daisy chain and the DIGITAL in a star of daisy chained pairs! Wouldn't look nice on a diagram! eek

I think it is neater to run the 2 together where possible.

Now, I must get back to transcribing the User Guide into latin! wink
