Following a search I came across a post from Duncs who had converted his 598 to SDI himself - anyone else try his mod with success?
Is Duncs still out there with the details?!

Hey Mark,
I'm looking to make the same mod to my 598DP. In fact I've already purchased a Moome SDI board which I was hoping my favorite local tech would install for me. No such luck though as all the install notes were so sketchy he wasn't comfortable taking it on. Another Hitchhiker- Thuety, also did the mod himself. Appearantly its not too huge a thing. I plan on taking a stab at it this winter. If you manage to get your hands on decent install notes I'd really appreciate a copy.
Happy Trails! Vince@freewheelcycle.com

Hi Chris It's a modification to the internal circuitry to allow a Serial Digital Interface output on the 598 DVD player. It's an interface more commonly found in the professional video world. The interface allows an uncompressed digital stream which, when fed into an external video processor, can improve the picture quality on a monitor/plasma/projector in comparison to the usual RGB SCART or component output on the 598. According to some commentators, the HDMI interface will make the SDI one obsolete.
Cheers
Mark

chris - beyond mark's very useful explanation, very few displays support SDI inputs. most folks who use SDI are running their signals to video processors which are then connected to their displays. in my case, i run SDI from my 598 to a Lumagen video processor, which does its magic and feeds my plasma via a DVI connction (the semi-pre-cursor to the HDMI connection mark mentioned).
doody.

SDI cables can be much longer than HDMI, SDI can be used for CRT projectors and other non-HDCP equipment...
HD621, G98DH, G68ADV, Bc Acoustiqe ACT A3, 5200C DSP33, NuForce Reference 9 monoblocks, 2x SB3's, Velodyne DD-15 & DD-12 Subwoofers and a Meridian sub.

SDI can be used for CRT projectors and other non-HDCP equipment... Just to clarify, this is because you're pulling the digital information straight from the MPEG decoder, prior to any other processing including HDCP encoding.

Are you still interesting in the info for the SDI Mod?
I can send you details pictures and a list of the bits you need to buy (only cost a few pound + the mod)
No soldering or drilling involved ;-)
Thanks

Thanks Hey Duncs, Long time no see! I'd posted a similar thread too not so long ago when my favorite local tech refused to do the install due to the crappy instructions I had. I've actually had a Moome SDI board in my possession for a couple of months now and really didn't want to charge in without some better instructions. I'd very, very, very much appreciate some clear photos, a parts list, and a step by step. Email vince at freewheelcycle dot com. Thanks! Happy Trails! Vince@freewheelcycle.com
