Well, I'm in PAL-land but have a plasma with 480 as vertical resolution. I know we have discussed that earlier here, that most displays won't be able to pixel-map even if they are getting their native resolution as input, but some displays will. And that was just the example that came quickly into my mind, not everyone needs to scale to HDTV resolutions and I think the scaler function should be able to scale to all the standard formats.
