Music hardware source is a Dell Precision laptop.
Music material coming from Tidal and JRiver (2 channel and multichannel DSD material).

Laptop connected via HDMI to HD621.

HD621 connected via 3 SmartLink cables to G61R multi digital inputs.

Works, sound is fine.

******************************************************************************************************************
Listening to either of the above mentioned three music sources, available DSPs on the G61R are only four: Cinema, THX, Ambisonics & Discrete.

Now, shouldn't there be a lot more DSP presets available?
I have the feeling some sort of MConfig intervention is needed. G61R install guide from page 35 talks about these, but it's not clear to me.

Maybe somebody can chime in to clarify, hopefully is relatively simple.

*When watching movie, from a Bluray player, I get the full DSP options to choose from.

Hi,

The first paragraph on p35 tells you what you can set up for 2 channel and 5.1. Your set-up is for 5.1, so the 2 channel DSP options aren't available.

So, set up another phantom source which only uses the L/R input from the HD621 and use that when playing 2 channel material.

Thanks.
Do I need to use MConfig for this or only G61R interface?
To make it clear, I have 3 DSP speakers lrc and 2 analog for rear, no SW.

Hi,

You should be able to set up another 'input' source via the onboard 'Wizard' (p22 in the manual).

The number of speakers doesn't matter as you're setting up for a 'stereo' input. The output will depend on what DSP option you've selected.

Still confused.
Page 20, my speakers are configured as 5.0.

I can put say GAME source in use, picking up the audio from rear MD1, which is fed from HD621 (and this picks up the laptop via HDMI).

Now, how do I tell the G61R to treat the GAME as 2 channel material?

Hi,

A 5.0 setup, simply tells the processor how many output channels are available (and determines how DSP effects are applied) but doesn’t directly affect how the inputs are set.

Try setting the GAME input (via the wizard) to only use the D1 input rather than MD1, so you only use the L/R input from the HD621.

However, I’d be tempted to set up another dedicated 2-channel stereo source input into the G61 from the laptop and leave the laptop/HD621 option for multichannel listening. Does the laptop have a stereo output via optical or coax than you can feed directly into the G61? Your G61RSL has a USB input which you could use at a pinch, although it’s not supposed to be the best input option available.

Hi Brian,
And thanks very much for the help.
Using only the D1 portion of the audio works fine.
The laptop has only an analog headphone output, now I don't know if we can call that hi-fi with connecting it to an analog input of the G61R.
Yes, the USB is there as well, as I know 16/48. Am I wrong if I say that the initial D1 should be at least theoretically be the best?
Meridian is totally unique with its connections, would've never guessed the solution, so thanks again.

Hi,

Glad you got sorted out.

Yes, I’d agree that using D1 is the best option for what you have available.

I wondered if your laptop might have a combined analogue/optical output that you could use for ‘stereo’ music, but they seem to be less common these days. A USB to SPDIF converter (like a 2nd hand Meridian Explorer or Explorer 2) would give you that option as well.

Now that you sorted, you can give “Trifield” processing a go.

I’d look in to an inexpensive Topping D10 or Matrix Audio x-SPDIF to take the USB out of your laptop and into the G61R. That would be very straightforward plug and play and allow easy mobility of the laptop, too.

Would that eliminate the HDMI out from the laptop? That's why?
Otherwise why adding an extra device?

Back to the presets, with a simple question, for my verification.
Is it true that after turning OFF the unit (rear switch), presets go back to default?\
I noticed this thing several times (the reset of presets), but didn't know the cause of it.
A few days ago I had to shut off the power completely in the house.
Now, listening again, everything at default, treble 0, bass 0 etc.
It would be nice not to loose these presets frown.

Reset how exactly? Are your speakers the controller? If so, every time you change sources.or power the system on, the DSP preset may not be what is was previously.
