My Control:15 has died (for a second time), this time a little more dramatically. The problem first showed up as a frozen screen. The next reboot hung or the startup screen. After a few attempts I decided to look inside and found rather a nasty mess. The SATA power cable to the disk drive had melted, leaving carbon scoring over the base, and melting the drive interface ports.
I pulled the drive out and detached the damaged cable, which turned out to be an SATA to Molex adapter cable, so easy enough to replace, but I don't yet know if this has fried the drive, although it seems likely, and also if the motherboard etc. is damaged, so will have to do further testing once I get a replacement cable.
If the rest of the system is ok, can I just install another equivalent drive? I'd like to salvage this if I can.
Also, I noticed that this was an SSD (Crucial BX100 500GB), was this fitted as standard, or likely swapped by a previous owner?
