Hi,

I consider to buy DSP5200SE speakers so I'd like to hear your thoughts on whether it's worth upgrading from the DSP5200.2 to the DSP5200SE. Does a beryllium tweeter make a big difference to overall sound?

Thanks for helping me to decide.

When MQA was abundantly available on Tidal, the SE speakers were the best way to make the most of this. Currently MQA is in limbo, with a sadly uncertain future… many of us hope it will reappear in a usable and readily available form, but who knows…

Technically, SE is a great improvement, whether you will enjoy them more is very subjective though. You need to listen for yourself, especially where there such is a massive difference in price - you have to decide whether that difference is worth it for you and can be justified or not. Yes, SE are very good, but .2 are also very good.

Hi
At the time of release of SE Meridian did a road show to demonstrate the SE and in particular the Beryllium Tweeter. By far the best immediate upgrade l have heard from a Meridian speaker and apart from the 8’s l have at owned most!
Best

Wasn’t there a firmware upgrade or two to the .2 models after this, which added quite a bit to the sound quality?

I seem to recall someone saying they would prefer SE on rock/electronic, but .2 on acoustic, or something to that effect.

The other thing to consider is that 7200.2 can be had for similar money to 5200SE. I faced this choice myself a few years back and, after direct comparisons, ended up very happily owning 7200.2 for a few years. They are phenomenal speakers and worth a listen also.

Are your current speakers 5200.2? There's a big difference between 5200 and 5200.2. 500 serial numbers. Falsely advertised on eBay etc.

SE is a great achievement that changes the whole electronics as well as the Be tweeter which is a godsend if you ask me.

Now if you really want the DSP7200 instead you could maybe go with a .2 if you want .

I'm not sure it's as simple as changing the "whole electronics", that's not what I found with the 7200SE upgrade.

I'm not saying the SQ increase wasn't great/worthwhile. Sometimes the panel is changed but how many components are different may depend on what you started with, if that makes sense. Just saying. I'm a big .2 fanboy.
