i have very similar problem with my 5200HC non SpeakerLink.

I got some symbols after switching on.

l can’t upgrade it to 1.4 firmware from 1.1.

I upgraded DSP7000 to 1.4, but upgrading 5200 failed after several minutes.
what can be the reason?

Steve what type/brand capacitors do you use for the 5200 and do you have a list with the values?

I'd recommend using Nichicon Fine Gold (if you can get hold of them).

Ideally for the DSP5200, replace like for like as Meridian had started to use quality capacitors for the newer DSPs.

Otherwise, look at the high-end Panasonics - but check the temperature and service life as 5200 amplifier panels run hot!

Possibly - recapping may help...

Are you certain you have the correct firmware for the 5200?

It is more likely a problem with the DSP/Comms board.

It is hard to remotely diagnose without having the speaker in front of me.

1.1 version on display when I press display on remote.

Thanks Steve. I will see if I can replace as much as possible with Nichicon fine gold. I'm thinking of adding an extra heat sink on the backside of the plate. Is there any reason to not do that?

@Anton, Ive had the same problem with the strange symbols when uploading the firmware to a 7200.2. It worked fine before the update but got error messages during the install. Being afraid that J could ruin the speaker a technician from the distributor came and installed the update with his laptop without any problems. So it was a com problem between the loudspeaker and the PC.

I think Steve meant are you trying to install the correct firmware?

I've done the recap. No more strange sounds and I dared to update to 2.63. It works fine. Only thing is that it doesn't show 7200HC during startup but still the strange symbols, but same goes for a pair of updated 3100's I recently acquired.
