I am still unable to get sound out of my speakers and I think there is a way to change the 861 from XLR output to Meridian Digital Output, but only via a computer.
My laptop doesn't have a serial port out, so I think that USB to RS232 is what I need. The one that I have won't connect the computer to the 861. The plugs do connect. Any ideas?
Is there something special I need to hook up my 861 to my laptop?

The widely recommended RS232 to USB adaptor is the Keyspan USA-19HS. Others do work but if you’re having problems the Keyspan is a known quantity and takes a lot of unknowns out of the equation when you’re having a battle to get it working. I think they are still available.
Having said that the main thing that gets missed when you’re first trying to get this working is that you MUST have a null-modem cable (I think it swaps the Tx and Rx connections compared to the standard RS232 cable?).
Good luck, it’ll be worth it.

The recommended null modem cable is here, where you’ve been having trouble already, I second the advice to get these exact cables, which are known to work every time. Did you try retyping your 861 to digital output from the front panel, to see if you get anything at all out of your DSPs? What type is it set to currently?

To find out what type your 861 is currently running:
Press the standby key on the remote or front panel.
Press the ^ (up arrow) key on the front panel until the display reads “Type in…”
Keep the up arrow key pressed while the until counts down to zero.
The current type will be displayed.
(You don’t have to change the type at this stage).
