I suppose this relates to another thread about the specification of the later DSP5200 and 7200. Meridian are clear that the maximum sampling rate/bit resolution is 96/24 with the SE iteration of these speakers. Is that defined by the hardware of the DAC or can a firmware upgrade change that limitation?

Good question. Probably hardware is involved too, I would think, but I remember seeing a DSP 8k announcement that promised 24 192 in "future firmware update".

I had vaguely recalled that as well. I guess there is no profit in providing a firmware update and quite a lot of work…..

The 6k sales flyer from 2001 also says "A future software update will enable support for 192kHz"
So we don't seem to be hardware limited on this. But this reminds me of another "abandonware" type of promise from Blackmagic regarding the Big Ursa's "upgradeable" turret. I won't get into that rabbit hole other that to say some promises just don't happen. I don't see why all legacy speakers couldn't handle 192, assuming they have the hardware grunt. But what that would take is not a topic for discussion here.

Almost certainly not related to the DAC hardware, but possibly to the comms boards. I think this is more related to Bob Stuart believing that anything above 24/96 was not needed for full reproduction, historically. The SE range were introduced with MQA which was still transmitted around a Meridian system at 24/96 or below, then unfolded in the DAC architecture, retrieving any actual audio information which might have been encoded at higher frequency rates (without wasting space with a whole lot of useless non-audio information). Sadly MQA as a solution seems to, at least temporarily, be MIA…
