Do you get any sounds from devices that are plugged into the 218? Please can you describe your setup in more detail.
This will make it easier to make suggestions.

Some more questions:

Have you tried with a different optical cable?

Have you tried with a different optical enabled device ?

If you're using a TV as the device, have you changed the sound settings to use optical if required?
