I just bought from a studio an old TOSlink / SPDIF to AES EBU.

It is an equipment from Sonic Solutions called Optical Converter.

I connect the AES/EBU XLR cable I made to it, but still no success. I am using the comms pins to turn the speakers ON, but there is no sound.

I tried to connect a non-SpeakerLink Meridian to the coaxial output and it reproduces the sounds from my TV.

Any ideas on what could be the thing that I am not seeing?

Is the SpeakerLink pinout input different?

Thanks.

The mystery goes on.

No sound ground AES out, but I made some experiments and discovered funny stuffs.

The M6 can wake up and play with only 3 cables connected between the MC200 and the speakers.

The orange white and the orange is the comm pins I used to control and only with the brown white the speakers played normally. I then connected the brown, the speakers paused the audio for a brief moment and then returned to play. When I connected the blue white (ground for AES) nothing happened, the speakers continued playing.

Know this I returned to my TV/Optical to AES converter, with no success. No sound, no noise, nothing. I tested with all 3 cables connected, with the browns and with only the brown/white and ground, nothing.

I am running out of things to try.

Could it be a ground differential problem? An AES EBU output problem?

I hope someone could help my with ideas.

Best Regards,
Jorge

Do you know what the tv is outputting as a signal? If it is anything other than stereo PCM, the M6 won't know what to do with it.

Hi Bruce.

The TV is outputting 2ch PCM, I was able to send the coaxial output of the converter to a DSP5000C and it plays normally, so I am more than sure that the TV is not only set to PCM, but can confirm it using this order M speaker.

Now I am controlling the speakers using the RS232 protocol via my Mac, but no sound yet...

If I have some way to try the AES output with another gear it would be great.

Is the M6 expecting some kind of Meridian encrypted audio file?

I am running the latest firmware:

M6_ 1.2.1
CPLD 3

To be sure my cable is ok, I connected all the wires that I am conneting in the XLR connector to the wire from the MC200 and I got sound from the speakers.

Is there a DIY way to convert SPDIF to AES, at least the impedance?

Thank you all for the help.

You may have the nail on the head so to speak. I will see if I can send some non-MHR audio into a test 3200 I have.

I know that others in this forum where able to send audio to M6 using a non M source, probably it was a Raspberry PI as the source and an Alchemy (non sure the model) to convert the SPDIF to AES. Not sure what was the firmware and it has something to do with my challenge.

In theory the process should be simple, something to control the speakers (done) and an audio source.

Thanks for the help.

Jorge

Hi Jorge,
What you need is a Meridian Audio Distributor 1

Thanks, Rick.

I am also considering a 218 zone controller, it seems to be very complete, but the Distribuitor is a more affordable solution.

As none of those are available in Brazil, so I am looking for other possible solutions.

Does some one know where I can buy the Distribuitor 1 online in USA? I will travel there soon, so it will be a very good solution.

Best Regards,

Jorge
