I just watched a YouTube video posted by M today advising dealers about the proper way to update firmware, wherein a special Meridian serial-to-RJ45 cable is said to be necessary.

Does anyone know about an available adapter that would allow those of us located hundreds of miles from a dealer to update using our connected ethernet cables?

When I purchased the SE upgrades for my 8K's, the (former) dealer's installer properly installed the new circuit boards and tweeters but failed to do the SW update to the new SE speakers because he wasn't supplied with the right tool (and wasted about an hour futzing around with it).

Eventually I did the SW upgrade myself using my laptop and one of Robert's Reviver adapters I owned which had a serial input. So, Yes, it is possible to do it yourself if you have the appropriate adapter and the firmware files.

Hi,

You need something to wire up the RS232 9 pin Dtype (Tx, Rx and Ground) to the SpeakerLink RJ45 connection.
There are several options:

- Purchase a Meridan device AC11 or AC12 ($$$)
- Purchase a Meridian SpeakerLink Firmware Update cable - SK1622 ($)
- Purchase a Reviver($$)
- Purchase a Baby Blue Cisco Console Cable ($)
- Build a DIY DB9 to RJ45 Cable ($)

Plus all the usual "stuff" you need:
- Windows PC/Laptop
- Meridian WinFUP
- USB-->RS232 Adapter (if the PC does not have a RS232 port)
- NULL Modem Cable

Regards,
Carl

PS I use one of these DB9 to RJ45 Modular Adapter, F/F with Rx and Tx crossed so I can just plug in the (home run) SpeakerLink cable from the processor end.

How does the updating process work?

I don’t see any serial connections.

My favourite cable for this is the blue Cisco RJ45 with a built in USB to serial converter. Very easy to find somewhere like Amazon. I previously made up a serial to RJ45 converter, but then I needed to find the serial cable and the USB adaptor each time.

I’ve tried using the Cisco cable to identify my speakers using Windows 10 but something pops up and no comms are showing in the drop down box in the Meridian firmware software.

I’ve read on the Meridian site that you can use the Distributor 1 to perform a firmware update, although it doesn’t explain how to do this easily (which connection to use). There are many connections and inputs on the rear of this device I'm inquisitive to know how a firmware update can be achieved using this unit?.

It has the following...

- USB (lights up when receiving power)
- RS232
- SpeakerLink In (lights up when USB is receiving power)
- SpeakerLink out Master
- SpeakerLink out Slave

Anyone have an idea which of the 3 SpeakerLink connections on the D1 you use to update a DSP?

Meridian advise this
Quote
Yes. This is useful if a suitable Serial-to-SpeakerLink cable is not available. Once the Distributor is connected to the SpeakerLink input socket on the loudspeaker using a network cable,

Firmware can be sent to the loudspeaker through a null-modem RS232 cable. A typical set-up would include laptop, USB-to-serial adapter, null modem (crossover) RS232 cable, Distributor, network cable, loudspeaker. Note that it is essential to use a “crossover” RS232 lead for this to work.
Which SpeakerLink as there are three? one in and two out?

Is the network cable Meridian refer to a standard network cable or a SPK cable?

Hi,

Pretty much as Meridian describe:

RS232 cable into Distributor 1. As you update one speaker at a time, then use the Master SL output cable from the D1 into the speaker input port.

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to update some new-to-me DSP5200SL speakers from firmware version 1.4 to 2.63, but the FUP program won't identify my speakers. Is that normal? Here's my setup:

Windows --> USB-to-RS232 cable --> AC12 --> RJ45 cable --> SpeakerLink Input on DSP5200

Also, please PM me if you have the 2.63 firmware available.

Thanks,
Chris

UPDATE: For future reference, the above setup works for updating DSP5200SL firmware, but the FUP program won't be able to identify the speakers beforehand.

Hi there,
The pin outs of SpeakerLink on Duncan's Info Site.
Pin 3 is TxD, pin 5 ground, pin 6 RxD

Hi,

I’ve bought the serial RJ45 cable and have a copy of Meridian device manager 0.49 but have seen the vid and its not that simple.

Is there someone that has the software (I have an older version of Meridian flash upload) and the firmware file for the DSP7200.2?

Use the flash uploaded (Fupload) To update the firmware in your speakers. What version is the firmware currently in your speakers?
