Good grief, what are those?

I do like the look of the new DSP9, and I would like to hear them eventhough I will not spend 60k on speakers. MDF maybe disappointing, but there are many high end manufacturers still use it. I would not judge a speaker only by the material.

A few points:

I am put off too by the rebadging of the existing Meridian tech, sound like an over active marketing department.
I don't understand the naming, why not DSP7400XE? Will we get a new range with a DSP5, DSP7 and DSP10?
There is nothing about more DSP functionality. I think Meridian being the pioneers on this, it would be possible to control the DSP with an app and provide more options to match the speaker to a room, maybe even with a microphone. Most functionality stayed the same for over 30 years, they have just been rebadged now..
I think it is a smart move they provide more input options, making it possible to use it outside a Meridian system too.
The lack of a display makes sense, we can control all with app on tablets etc.
Are the feet now also provide an improved damping like gaia?
If the 818v3 is now not available anymore, what should we controle these with? will there be new endpoints?


I hope they sound fantastic and will be a succes for M. The more important speaker may be the reveal of the new DPS5..

The comments regarding resin are interesting, and it would seem to me that this cabinet design could be a good choice for resin.

I think about the work Meridian did on the custom resin they used for the M80 I have. To date, this is the best sounding mini system of this type I've heard.

Vivid Kaya I think.

I don’t care how good those sound, they’re so ugly I just couldn’t have them in the house.

Pulp Fiction springs to mind - Sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I’d never know cuz I wouldn’t eat the filthy m******s.

OTOH, having seen the Vivids makes the new Meridian's seem more attractive.

I actually think they look good but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is at least acoustic engineering. I’d like to hear the theory behind the suppositories…

Yes, I’m familiar with the Gaya. Not my thing, but I can understand why others might like them, very much a taste thing.

I think what irritated me as much as anything with the DSP9 was the presentation of MDF being groundbreaking and innovative and the BS about curved spaces looking less obtrusive, when these are clearly more obtrusive than the older design… etc., etc.

I’m as averse to unfounded marketing BS as I am to the looks.

I would have found it easier to swallow the new shape of it had been well justified by an explanation of solid engineering reasons it had to be so. I imagine if Bob S/Richard H had presented it would have been very different.

Who is the head of engineering and design at Meridian now?

I will say, in favour of the 9, that for a while I’d been thinking it would be great if Meridian made a smaller, but still full-range speaker. This might acoustically fit the bill, my other misgivings notwithstanding. I guess if you love, or don’t mind the looks, and if it sounds great and you have the money, why not?
