Evening all,

Has anyone here experimented with Roon's Parametric EQ?

I’ve had a play (small play) but am interested to find out if others have had success with this and use it as part of their settings.

I’m running DSP3200 wall mounted as mains fed directly from a 210 (G61rsl feeds 210 for surround duties and is all working well)

I feel being close to the wall the speakers could do with a top lift slightly to open up the mid and treble area and open up the sound stage. The small play I’ve had has made a noticeable difference.

Are there HH here who have experiences they could share and what they found worked for them?

Many thanks
David

David,

I've tried the Convolution filter for a bit of correction. I have it running on a couple of Bluesound systems to great effect, especially on a Powernode with bookshelf speakers installed in a French dresser - really sorts it out! I didn't trust myself with doing the EQ myself so this uses a microphone to measure the response for correction.

I tried on DSPs too - mixed results although that room is in a state of development so I don't have a final setup yet to correct/measure (if it needs it).

[full disclosure: I work for Roon] I use a G68 to create MRC measurements, then I transcribe the values to a Roon parametric EQ for each channel (using a procedural EQ umbrella). A tedious procedure, but it works well and I can't hear any obvious audio "damage" (I listen to MQA material almost exclusively on my 8kSEs.)

I’ve played around quite a lot.

I have Roon EQ settings for headphones and also for my DSP 6000 and 7000s.

Boosted treble and pulled down bass around problem room modes. With seating limitations, when you can’t room treat or move gear into an ideal position I think the PEQ is a good option as way to manage.

You can also save multiple settings, so you can experiment. It is powerful stuff!

I was under the impression that if you used any of the DSP functions of Roon then you couldn't implement MQA as the integrity of the file had been changed. Has this changed or have I been living with a misconception all this time and missing out?

You've been able to use most DSP functions in Roon with MQA -- and preserve rendering -- since Roon 1.5 released in May 2018! Pretty much the only thing you can't do is up- or down-sample (but why would you want to do that...?). There might be something else, but I can't remember offhand.

I haven’t had chance to go back in and tweak/play since initially setting it up but I’m finding that it could be quite a positive feature given the limited space the speakers have against the wall.

It’s great to hear other opinions and experiences..

That’s interesting to take on board the MRC settings and move them across, thank you VK 🙌🏻

I guess it’s all about experimenting and moving the little coloured dots around to see what works and sounds best for the room

I’m guessing the more DSP you add the more processing is drawn from the core?

Many thanks
David

I fully appreciate that DSP3200 are not taking full advantage of MQA but it’s nice to think I have a way to full bring the best out of them in the location they are right now.

There's actually one notch filter parameter, needed for the transcription to Roon, which is "missing" in the MRC (configuration) app, but it's easily calculated from two other parameters which *are* there.

Q = Centre freq. (Hz) / Width (Hz.)

And you want to use a Peak/dip filter type in Roon.
