I can connect from a digital source direct to my DSP5200 speakers.
Can I then use a SpeakerLink connection between the master and slave speakers or do I need to use a digital coax connection?

Hi Adrian,
Yes, I ran a pair of DSP like that for a while.
Just make sure the first speaker in the chain is configured to use its D2 (coax) input for the source(s) use are using.
The 2nd speaker will of course still be using SL for all sources (as it fed from the 1st).

Is there any sonic advantage or downside (timing or SQ) connecting this way?

OK, that’s how I connect from a more recent surround processor in the theater ... but my living room system has only coax out from a 568.2mm (with no SpeakerLink) which sounds very good.
If I run coax to my Left Master and then on via SpeakerLInk to the Right Slave, are there compromises that would make me want to stay with SPDIF?

I thought SL was an upgrade over SPDIF. It is 'balanced' vs single-ended basically.
With that said, connectors and cable still matter. Meridians SL cable is ok. Supra Ethernet cat 8 pretty good but not flat form-factor, AQ Vodka RJ/E better, AQ Diamond RJ/E better still, Shunyata Omega Ethernet the best I've tested and it is not a subtle difference IMHO with the Omega.
