For fun I connected a Meridian F80 into the Meridian 808v6 MQA DAC. The connection was optical out from the F80 into the optical IN on the 808.
I played several MQA CDs from the F80 and the 808 showed full MQA decoding up to 352khz.
It has been suggested that the F80 sends the CD signal bit perfect to the 808 so does this mean ANY non MQA CD transport that can send a signal bit perfect can be used to play MQA CDs provided it’s connected to a fully decoding MQA DAC?

I used to run my 800v4 into my 818v3 and it happily played MQA CDs with the 818 reporting full MQA.
I also tested it with a 500 transport - that worked too!
I've not tested other manufacturers' digital transports so it could just be a Meridian thing!
Cheers,
Steve

Thanks Steve, was the connection from the 800v4 optical or SPDIF/coax? The F80 only had optical out.

I used SPDIF (Coax) for both. never tried with optical but looks like that works too!

As long as the player doesn't change the bitstream in any way, I believe the MQA decoder should have no issues. The only time you should see a problem is if you put something like a non-MQA processor (such as a 518) in the signal path.
Have fun :-)

The only time you should see a problem is if you put something like a non-MQA processor (such as a 518) in the signal path. But even that's fine in Bypass mode (where you still get the benefit of the 518's PLL (phase locked loop) de-jittering.
