Hi

For music I have 7200SE using Roon and Tidal as source. Via a 210 for music.

For movies 7200SE 5500HC, 8 x DSP33, SW5500, SW1600 via a 271 Arcam AV40 combo.

Now traditionally I listen to movies at c. 65 which I think is c. Reference.

For music mostly only 40 to 45, but tried at 50 tonight, quite impressive. But noticed my wife wincing at the volume. Tested with DB METER and getting c. 65dB which is sub concert volume by quite a lot. Now from what I have read 85dB is safe for avoiding hearing loss.

Now my ears a bit old (61 years) now so trying to protect. What levels do others listen at?

Kevin

Hi,

It varies of course depending on the music / film being played and my (our) mood, but typically it's circa:

- TV 50-55 (general watching)
- Music 65-75
- Movies 75 ish

I have on occasion cranked it up to 87 (0dB gain) for the odd special effect / opening sequence scene to demo to friends but I'd never watch a whole film at the level.

Regards,
Carl

PS To give perspective, the listening position is about 10 feet from the centre speaker.

I used to think that 50dB (on the 7200 speaker display) was loud enough, however since upgrading to the SE's I've been listening at 60-65dB. After a bit of wincing, it definitely sounds better at this volume, but doesn't help my wife who often works from home in the evenings.

70 most of the time for music. For movies it depends.

It depends on the source and audio encoding. Even across movies, a comfortable level isn't always the same volume setting.

Movies: 75-85
Music: 60-85
TV: 40-70

I do occasionally watch good quality music concerts at 93 and even on my relatively low-end system, it's clean, smooth and punchy and not fatiguing at all.

I hit 87 once and it lasted a few seconds only. Never again. That is like standing behind a plane during takeoff.

Normal music (casual listening) it is under 67, more serious listening is above 67 but not for more than about 30 minutes at a time - then back down for a bit.

Are you guys reading the volume number on the dial or using a dB meter?
Red Hot Chili Peppers, 94 dB with 104 dB peaks.
I worked building houses over 40 years, it's odd that my sensitivity is linear. My hearing loss is the same at 16 KHz as it is at 1 KHz and 50 Hz. I'll take it as long as it lasts.
