Thinking about upgrading my DSP5000C 96/24 to DSP5200HC. Worthwhile performance upgrade? My mains L/R are DSP5500 96/24.

In my opinion yes. To me the 5200hc sounds less boxy.

Hi

I have to say, that having experienced the DSP5500HC, with a L/R pair of DSP5500s (all 96/24), presentation literally blew me away. The amount of air being moved by the centre was awesome at high volumes. I previously had DSP5ks across the front, they were also 96/24.

No doubt, this doesn't help your decision making process, sorry!

Jon

Bruce, what would be a better choice/timbre match to go with my L/R 5500? 5200HC or 5500HC sonically?

Also, seems there are several versions of the 5200HC standard, reference special edition, performance 5200.2HC differences sonically?

Lastly, my 568.2 does not support RJ45 speaker links, so I'm assuming any DSP speaker choice must support coaxial digital audio links.

The best sonic match is a DSP5500HC. However incorporating one in a system raises a number of issues:

Physical size
Weight
Will your furniture handle it
Logistics

A 5000C, 5200HC and 5500HC have the same tweeter.

I always suggest for movies the biggest and baddest center presents the most impressive performance. If the above listed points are ok with you, 24/96 5500HC's tend to be pretty cheap given the performance gains.

Obviously a 5200SEHC or 5200.2 center will have a different sound than a 5000C or legacy 5200HC. A 5200SL will not sound much different (if at all) than the legacy 5200HC.

Bruce, would the 5200SEHC or 5200.2 center be equal or better the performance of the dsp5500hc?

I don't think so. I suspect the 5200SE would be better in some respects but for a movie experience, the sheer scale of the 5500HC would win out for me.

Cinema: Meridian 271, 3 x DSP640 (behind screen), 4 x DSP320 (in-ceiling), 4 x DSP3100 (surrounds), 2 x AC12 (interface). 2 x Perlisten D12s subs, Lyngdorf MP40 processor. DT 145" 2.35 AT screen. Sony VW870 projector & S-T lens, Lumagen Radiance Pro.
Lounge: Roon, NUC, Kef LS50 Wireless + 2 x REL Gibraltar-2 subs

Hi,

I did this exact upgrade from a DSP5000HC to the DSP5200HC and noticed very little, if any, sonic improvement.

I also have a DSP5500HC in another system and fully agree with the other comments here that you will get a lot more sonically out of that upgrade. The 5500HC is really big step above the 5000HC in scale.

DSP5500 upgrade is a gamechanger!

80% of movie mix is produced by the centerchannel.
Trifield benefits immensely from this.
