From what I’ve read, the DSP only changes the frequency response so the direct and reflected sound gives a natural (to our ears) response.
This would make a huge difference in a room with reflective surfaces, but the reflections are still there.

I remember when I first applied acoustic panels at the primary and secondary reflection points, my first thoughts weren’t of much improved imaging, but that the sound was dead; this was fixed by updating the existing room correction curves (DSP on subs) and just getting used to the direct sound.

Now I appreciate the improved imaging, especially in Trifield (amazingly better), but it does look a bit crap…

I would argue, with the latest DSP's and 818v3 (along with decent power conditioning), assuming decent speaker placement (ideally with the speakers >1m into the room, if at all possible), the 3D imaging of musicians on a stage with you sat in the audience now exceeds that of Trifield

I do, however, miss Trifield's ability at times to make it sound like you were in the middle of the performance.

Let’s say you had another vertical 7200SE as the centre and for arguments sake an 861v8 in the mix for Trifield, plus more of your preferred power bits, so it’s consistent all round to what you have already.

Do you think Trifield would then have a chance compared to ‘only’ a pair of 7200SEs & 818?

I guess what I am getting at is - got to try it really, before concluding (too much)?

I have used Trifield fairly extensively in the past and the experience was pretty amazing on many albums, however I felt the centre speaker often brings the centre image too far forward, rather than vocalists, for example, being further back on the stage, behind the speakers.

Of course, it is quite possible the newer equipment from Meridian fixes this, but the 818v3 was needed IMO to create the best 3D image Meridian I know of to date and this update sadly never came to the 861.

Trifield is still awesome. You get immersed into the performance. The more you scale your setup, the better and more intimate it gets.

Trifield settings and ground isolation of center is important.


Trifield DSP center, EQ flat, Depth: 0.0, Width: 1.5.
Center and mains must be equidistant from listener.
High Quality isolation with Solid Tech Disc of Silence 4x with 5 springs or Townshend Pods under DSP7200SEHC.
I tried 4x and 5x Iso-puck 76 under DSP7200SEHC but it doesn’t sing like the DSP8k top do so moved those to rear duty.

For rears and sides I keep them full-range, no cut-off with SE speakers. They are too good to have that default setting of 3kHz cut off or whatever it is.

Would love to go back to surround sound as an option, unfortunately most of my listening is now through headphones which have become the focus. One day, when the children are older…
