Coming in late and realize that you have purchased a replacement, but I have a comment on streaming. You asked along the way if you should just stream. I would suggest at the very least to ADD streaming.

My introduction to Meridian came when I bought a dealer demo 500/5000 combo some 20years ago. CD’s had been such a convenience over vinyl! But even they became cumbersome once streaming came along.

The 500 has been sold off, replaced with a Bluesound Node which I use to do the first unfold of MQA from Tidal and feed my DSP’s directly. The step up in convenience has been an order of magnitude greater than that from vinyl to CD! And the selection available to you is astounding. Allowing the streaming services to just create playlists and mixes related to your favorite tracks has introduced me to artists and tracks I would never have known.

Realize this is a bit off topic, but the forum has been a little quiet lately…

Almost Moribund except for the valuable new members asking pertinent questions on legacy products. Also The Slow Burn thread from Wimbledon that surpasses anything from Meridian in living memory.

I will revive a moribund thread to ask a question I have reading this thread.

What is the opinion of sound quality of the 808 vs the 818 for streaming? That is using the USB input rather than Roon/Sooloos and assumes the newer units with ID29.

I don’t spin disks anymore. Does the 808 remain competitive used only as a DAC? Does the 818 remain competitive used as a DAC without using it as a preamp?

Finally, is the Ultra DAC an improvement over an 808v6 with an ID29?

These questions assume using analog out, no confusion of path i.e. no 808 into an 818. Anyone heard direct comparisons?
