As each speaker appears to have a single RCA analogue input, I think each speaker must act as a mono unit when using this input. That does appear a bit of a departure from the existing approach.

PS The article here talks about: 'setup and control via the new Meridian B-Link Bluetooth device', so it would appear Bluetooth may be an option for controlling the units (in addition to SL and RS232).

Couple of thoughts.

Am I the only one who is concerned about having a bluetooth transmitter in the speaker? Is there not a chance of increased noise having a transmitter in the speaker?

Just wondering about the pricing. If the new speaker is £75k and they seem to have taken the 8000SE off the menu, then thats a massive jump from the 7200SEs @ £30k. I demo'd the 8000SEs earlier this week! Not sure I can stomach a 50% increase.

??? Departure from what existing approach of analogue inputs to DSP speakers ??

I don’t quite get the question.

Yes, I had a similar thought about the class-D amplifiers, which use a similar approach to a switched mode power supply.

When I said: 'That does appear a bit of a departure from the existing approach.', I was referring to Meridian having previously used a separate processor that contained the ADC's.

Fantastic,
So what do we hope for on the processor side then going forward?
861 that can handle room correction, Atmos and MQA…
A new Bluetooth spinner that can handle MQA CDs…

Ok ... thanks Jeremy. I thought you were emphasising the use of a single phono and hence mono rather than the actual gorilla in the room.

That is a bit odd isn't it. They don't support it in the in-walls either which I understood was because the typical in-wall client didn't need/want it and the cost of inclusion was wasted (or words to that effect).

The closest reference I can see is this set of MQA-type words ... without saying MQA.

I wonder if the reference to 192k and 384k inputs are much the same as today's 8kSE in that they are capable only via an MQA source and not actually via a straight PCM signal? What system outputs such rates unfolded anyway? Curious.

It does suggest maybe another box is imminent to feed the 8kXE inputs.

I'm pretty sceptical about these speakers but lets see how they perform in the flesh.

My personal experience with Meridian Audio is one of a lot of disappointment over the past 3 years, their attention to detail has dropped considerably (it took them 3 attempts to get me a new pair of DSP5200SE's that weren't scratched, coming away at the joins etc.) and then they delivered me a brand new 818 that was again scratched to pieces and didn't even have the latest firmware installed making me question very much how much actual in factory testing was done ... for an £8K preamp this is appalling. The 818 was returned and I just kept my 218.

Their customer service is also shockingly bad and my confidence at what's happening behind the doors in Huntington is really low. There is personally no way I would pay out £75K+ for a new product from Meridian anymore ... for me it just feels like the heart of Meridians expertise left quite some time ago and I would bet those with really good 8000SE's already have the pinnacle of their speaker products.

How come we have never heard anything about an 'Extreme Engineering Programme'? ... for me this sounds more like a marketing exercise but I would love to be proved wrong and for their to be a true renaissance of activity and really good new products coming from the company.

I expect they will continue to use a Comms link (over SpeakerLink) to communicate with other Meridian equipment & speakers.
The Bluetooth is for communication to iPads & Phones for setup and control, currently handled from an MSR using Infra-Red.
The Meridian App currently used to setup and control 218, 271, 210, 251 will be expanded to include the DSP8000XE.

The Analogue inputs are Mono. So each speaker will have a mono Analogue input (both XLR and RCA) and convert to a single channel Digital.
This is actually a separate Analogue input module, an IA21, which converts Analogue to SpeakerLink, and then connects to the DSP8000XE SpeakerLink input.
One IA21 required for each speaker, included.

The Bluetooth receiver is a small separate item, not built into the DSP8000XE.
It can be disconnected once the speaker has been configured.
Or left connected and used as a Bluetooth input.
