Might be a stupid question but i have to ask that.
How can we feed a multichannel SACD audio stream to the 568?As far as i know SACD does not have a digital out , right? I heard SACD has only two analog outs for stereo material but what about multichannel ?If it does not have a digital out what preamp has a 5/6/7 or 8 analog ins for multichannel recordings ?
The same goes for DVD-A.It is a shame that for the next generation music we have to upgrade our 568.
By the way i heard pioneer is releasing a DVD-V / DVD-Audio in march! What kind of outputs does it have ?6 analog outputs ?a digital output ?coaxial ?Toslink ?Firewire? Who can find out?
By the way pioneer is also releasing a new machine (6.000 usd street price) that is able to do SACD/DVD-V/DVD-A -> that's what we expect from Meridian right?I just hope we can have an universal transport rather than a player with equipped dacs
Because of the high quality of the out put, both SACD and DVD-A have the same problem, not a technical problem, just a content one.
The content providers do not want DIGITAL outputs on these new devices because it makes piracy easy, so SACD players do the Digital to A in the box! This kind of defeats the object, as Stacey pointed out in another thread the DAC's in the high end Sony player are 10 years old!
Now Meridian have an encrypted digital link that will mean that a Meridian DVD-A player will be able to pass a digital signal from the player to a Meridian processor!! This is the great news for Meridian owners and the content owner is happy.
I guess an SACD player might be able to output PCM in two channel form at 96/24, don't know?
Not pleasent to say the least
The 568 might need an upgrade but this would be far cheaper than adding a 6 channel pass through.

Oh well i know that SACD does D > A internally but i read in this forum that sacd is able to do multichannel.I wonder how if it has only two analog outs (stereo).
I know the issue about dvdaudio digital outs i'm just wondering how are the digital outputs of this brandnew pioneer DVD/video-DVD/audio player
The new Philips Multichannel SACD/DVD player (SACD-1000) has 6 analog outputs for Multichannel. And I assume the new Multichannel Sony SACD players due out in April (SCD-C555ES) and May (SCD-CE775) will also have analog outputs.
On the DAC question, the Sony press release says both players will feature "a new Super Audio D/A converter system (SA DAC)."
The folks at dCS ( http://www.dcsltd.co.uk/News/ces2001.htm ) showed an SACD player at CES that had a 1394/Firewire output which they say will output both Stereo and Multichannel SACD in digital form. Their web site also suggests that the standard consumer digital SACD output will be 1394/Firewire.
Makes sense. Although I'm not sure where dCS got this info - as I haven't seen such an announcement from Sony/Philips to date. Unless dCS knows something we don't.
As for Meridian, at CES they talked about an SACD Input card for the 861 to be developed after the 598 DVD-A player ships. What wasn't clear from that mention was whether Meridian plans to keep the DSD signal in that format before conversion to analog (along the lines of dCS, Sony, Philips and Accuphase) or whether they plan to convert it to PCM before analog (as the Pioneer "universal" AX-10 player does.)
We'll have to "stay tuned" for details from Meridian there, I suppose.
I had a chat with the Meridian guys at the Bristol show on what form SACD would take if it was supported, because of the well know problems with DSD it is very likely that it will be converted to PCM.
Meridian view is very much let the market decide, if people want SACD, Meridian will give it to them, after all they are in business.
I would think so. I know at one point there was even talk of a player that would do DVD, DVD-A and SACD. The complication seemed to be that the physical watermark on the SACD discs requires an added chip to decode it.
As for converting to PCM, it's a mixed bag. If you convert, you can use the various modes and switching in the Meridian players.
On the other hand, such a PCM conversion does elminate some of the sonic advantages of the DSD system.
Current SACD players can't play multi-channel SACDs. (At least the multi-channel track.) You need a special multi-channel SACD player for that. It will have 6 analog outputs only.
dCS will probably do like Sharp and Meridian and use a proprietary interface that will only work with their products. I hear Sony does not want a digital interface for SACD.
The 861 already has a multichannel input card, the IA40. It has two pairs of 6-channel inputs.

that's what we expect from Meridian right?
I would not expect Meridian to support SACD.
I currently have the Pioneer DV-38a DVD-V/A player. It has 6 analog outputs for DVD-A.
That's the point, there are no advantages to using DSD over PCM, a number of papers have been published and the unfortunate truth is that DSD is a BIG STEP BACKWARDS.
Ha if your happy to have 10 year old dacs convert you SACD, pass it out as analog to any high end processor (not just Meridian) and have it converted to PCM anyway, then I guess that's your call.
Whilst I am not the greatest fan of SACD, if Sony really will not release a digital interface then they are doing a great job of killing their baby.

Funny that Sony call DAC technology that has been around for years "a new Super Audio D/A converter system." 64 times oversampling 1 bit DACs went out with the stone age. They went out because it is physically impossible (mathematically proven in an AES paper) to correctly dither such a system to produce correct linear output.
On another point- I get really upset by content providers flexing their political muscle about "piracy." The largest form of piracy is performed by organised groups who have CD/DVD/SACD duplication equipment in the back of a lorry (in Russia, India, Hong Kong, etc.). They can churn out hundreds of bit-accurate copies in a day.
Companies seem to spend a lot of effort combatting trivial "give a tape to your friend" activity while turning a blind eye to wholesale bootlegging.
Well, dCS says Sony and Philips are working on a digital output for SACD. Time will tell if that's the case.
As for AES papers on 1 bit sound, I understand that there will be papers at the upcoming AES about the superiority of DSD over PCM. So the debate will continue.
In the meantime, I'd suggest listening to both formats.
