Are they painted with black lacquer or is it an enamel paint?

Got some fine scratches I want to (carefully) polish out...

The company that does the painting for M is HQ Lacquer of Chessington in England. You will easily find them on the Internet and could email or phone them for their advice. I wanted to get an old REL sub lacquered and I found them very helpful.

Please post what you find out here. Many of us have gloss black gear. Will be great to hear what they recommend for buffing out any swirls scratches. Etc.

Thank you!

Got the answer back from them last week...

As for as far as the dent goes, that is a bit more tricky, the cabinets are sprayed with pigmented polyester lacquer. I can explain the method we would use to repair the dent but unless you have access to the same products we use this would not be feasible (I assume that you are based in US?).

An alternative method of repair would be to abrade the dented area with 180 grit paper the fill the dent with an automotive two pack filler then sand it flat as you would a small dent in a car. Then your guy would have to spray the localised area with a black lacquer and try to blend it in as he would on a car. Not ideal but depending where the dent is, the repair might be acceptable.

Michael

I think it’s great that you have a point of contact for the finishers.

Does anyone know if this company did the work back in the day for the 6000 head units? I would love to know what was used and how to reproduce the gold/brass thin band that wraps the side of each head unit.

If you have further communication with them would you mind asking for me?

Thanks

Steve

Steve, their web address is https://www.hqlacquer.com/contact/

Took them a while to answer.. but I blame that on COVID quarantine measures plus the holidays...

Nice guys ... very helpful.
