@Longitude0: Thanks for sharing your experience. Maybe i will try this in the future. With this solution an important point for me would be that the ceiling speakers are inexpensive.

@VinceHoffmann: Thanks for your input. I think some newer film may have a better immersive sound mixing. So a full Meridian Setup would be more effective here.

However, there is one point to consider: So far there are very few surround processors with multichannel digital outputs on the market.

Kind Regard,
Andi

Meridian have covered that base with the 271 which allows their speakers to be used with any processor.

As Jon Raines pointed out, the Meridian 271 was created to address this problem albeit not nearly as ideally as would be a new Immersive capable M processor with direct HDMI inputs and DACs capable of dealing with all current native formats.

As for a matching high quality Meridian DSP speaker solution for best practice Atmos ceiling installations, you would need to look at the long discontinued DSP33. It has proper reinforced hardpoints on the rear that could be used with the same K&M #24496 heavy duty tilting ceiling mounts I'll be using with the ATC SCM12i Atmos height channels I'm adding.

@VinceHoffman:
Thanks for the tip with the DSP33 loudspeakers. This could also be a possibility for ceiling speakers in the future.

Why would DSP33s be best practice? I am using a combination of DSP3200s and DSP320s quite successfully. What am I missing out on???

The DSP33's cast metal enclosure features threaded hard points on the rear. These were intended to allow for purpose-made wall mounting brackets (Omni-mounts were popular back then) but would also support heavy duty ceiling mounts like the K&M 24496 tilting ceiling mounts and matching K&M 34354 interface adapter plates I've ordered for the ATC SCM12i.

So it is just mounting rather than anything specific to the speakers? FYI the DSP3200s also have threaded hard points for a K&M wall mounting bracket. I have 5 mounted in such a way with room for 2 more!

Well after a quick look at a pic of the rear of the DSP3k2, I suppose there is no reason not to mount the 3200 upside down in order to facilitate ceiling mounting. One would need to double check with K&M but in theory it ought to work.

No theory required at all. Meridian support the speaker either way up and so does the mount. I have done it and it works!

Let me guess Anthony-Howard, you used the K&M wall mounts and then flipped the loudspeaker upside down to get it as close to the ceiling as possible? Did you also purchase and install the K&M ceiling mounts for Atmos speaker placement along the ceiling?

Not at all. The DSP3200s have no boundary settings so to speak so there is a little breathing room around them. For the ceiling speakers I am using DSP320s.

That is interesting about the lack of boundary settings in the DSP3200 Anthony-Howard. Are you certain of this? 'Cuz if this is indeed the case, that would suggest that the older DSP33 which definitely does include user-adjustable boundary settings during configuration, would be preferable for on-wall or on-ceiling use.
