The delivery guy dropped the first - and they didn’t want it back, as the centre disc spindle became slightly out of alignment. This was fixed by butchering a set of feeler gauges, to build-up the underside of the spindle so that it was properly aligned. He gave it to me, and I bought the SME3009 for it (from Comet). I gave the 401 back to him when Direct Drive turntables first appeared.
In recent years, my Brother has downsized his audio system - and I gave him my old Technics linear tracking turntable in its place. Subsequently, he has 2 x Garrard 401’s in storage.
