I have a 561 (still works fine after 19 years) with a 5.1 analog speaker set up (audio labs 8000 series power amps and Kef Q series speakers).
I now have a spare 2 channel power amp and pair of speakers, I was wondering if I can decode the digital speaker output from the 561 to get a 7 speaker set up, or can I only drive DSP speakers from the digital speaker output?
Thanks

You could decode it but, the digital outputs are not subject to volume control so keeping the volume synced would be a problem.

You could use a 518 with the volume set to master between the 561 digital output and the DAC, join together with a C5 comms lead and it will track the volume.
I did this with a 568 a long time ago and it worked fine, limited to 48kHz though.

Just thought, if you were to go to the trouble of adding a 518, you could just buy a 568 and sell the 561; the 568 has 8 analogue outputs.

Thanks for your advice.
Looks like I will stick with things as they are, especially as it seems the serial port is being uncommunicative
