'Push on' - It's a standard optical input - no demodulator needed except for laserdisc players - never owned a laserdisc myself to know why.
The only way to know for sure what source label is physically connected to optical input is to do a retype (ie factory initialisation) to a known basic type. But you will be back at square one for that and sounds like the dull red signal may well be the issue. I would be surprised if it was the cable as they seem pretty robust to me unless they have been abused. Another optical source may be a better reference - TV, DVD, etc.
