I know that I should look but does the 218 offer volume control? It’s in your best interests to consult the user manual for anything you choose to purchase. All 200 series products require a reasonably recent tablet to control them - including volume control. The 218 is a DAC: it will upsample fed inputs to its analogue output to 24/192. If you want something with a proper/physical volume control, then consider an AC200 (albeit without MQA).

I'm using the 218 as a DAC and preamp for my DSP's. I may be the only person left using fm radio but the analog input on the 218 is welcome as is the digital coax for my CD player.

Cheers all,
This is all very interesting why don't these boxes have a wider profile?
210 seems to be a good way to go if you want to use your own DAC, or feed it vis my SU in the interim. My 'Audio Note One' DAC sounds a little soft (rolled off in the highs) to my ears, this might be an impedance issue with my amp.
218 seems to have the advantage that it has an inbuilt DAC and I note the option to change the volume via its analogue outputs if need be. Plus the analogue input would be helpful.
Not yet figured out what remote control it uses.
And I hadn't even considered the 200 controller, I need to investigate further.

Control is via free downloaded Meridian app via separately purchased tablet - either iOS or Android.
The AC200 uses a basic supplied/physical remote control.

My MSR+ controls my 218 DSP SE system along with the Meridian all and the Roon app. IR is an option.
No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

If you only have a 218/210/258, and don’t have DSP’s with a visible display, requires a G12 for IR.

Won't any cheap IR sensor plugged into a 2xx work?

Thanks for your replies all.
I'm going to do a little more reading up on DAC pre's which might suit my budget before deciding 210 or 218

Won't any cheap IR sensor plugged into a 2xx work? So one would think, but a previous discussion suggests otherwise.

Wow. How astoundingly non-interoperable.

Given the minuscule design of the 200 Series, maybe Meridian could extend the (install) range to a matching component that included a visual information display with integral IR.

1. Might be cool
2. Tech support nightmare, see the demise of the Explorer 2.
Same with 3rd party IR receivers, supporting only your own lessens the impact on tech support.
