Both DSP8000 and 7000 are hugely better than the other speakers you list. Meridian are not wrong about the incredible advantages of their DSP and active approach. The whole point about buying it as a complete system is it works so much better. You like open, airy and transparent? You like neutral, natural midrange? Tight bass (and plenty of it on hand)? You like adjustable and pin-point imaging? These are the reasons I picked 8ks. Don't be tempted back to lesser models!
Not sure that DSP 7000`s or 8000's are better than other speakers mentioned, different maybe more convenient and tidy maybe but better not so sure we have 8000`s and currently we have a set of Quad 989`s with Velodyne DD15`s and they are also very, very good, different but good and the point about soundstage, open, airy, transparent, mid range and bass and so much more can be equally said of most high end systems it is very subjective.
The friend who we got our 8000`s from has a pair of Wilson Alexandria`s they are just phenomenal but at a massive cost but again subjective.
So my advice would be listen to your ears let them do the talking get a home demo if possible or at worst take your source and amp to the demo venue.
And if you`re in the UK talk to a good importer who may advise you on how to bring in goods from the US without incurring high duties?
I'd agree with the sentiment above - it's very subjective. The only way to buy is to listen to everything you can, and trust what your ears tell you. Any other route can lead to a very expensive waste of money. For me, DSP speakers would have been a mistake. For others, they're the right approach.
On the post above from Tim-Ann - Alexandrias, wow, somebody actually bought a set? I thought that at the price they want for those, no-one would ever buy them.
I have arranged to hear some Sophias at A. Sounds in the near future. I will use my own kit to power them, but not my own room.
I have also made contact with the guy selling his on hifi candy. Having heard DSP 7000 I did like the sound, and I am fully expoecting to still think so. But this Wilson stuff as P944 said is worth listening to as mistakes can get very expensive!
Listen to some Proac speakers if you are in the UK: British made (much better value in the UK than outrageously marked-up US imports) but has acclaim from reviewers all over the world, including the US against US made speakers.
I've arranged to hear DSP7000 vs Wilson Sophia with a dealer in London in the next week or so. He can replicate my Krell, but not the 861, but since I'll only be listening 2 channel. He does have G91 / G98 / G07 - should I ask him to use the G91 with both set ups - will that sound much like the 861?
I'm going in the afternoon on a work day so I'm on the train and have no hope in carting my 861 with me!
Also consider the JM Lab utopia be range. I thought micro, alto and diva were all stunning and perhaps the only range that could tear me away from B&W nautilus series.
I must admit - I have just (last hour) had a delivery of toasted Nordost Red Dawn's arrive and I'm tempted to save myself a fortune, keep my SFs for a while and spend some of the money on a better sub!
