It is called "Tri-Field" but it probably is just a similar name ..

If the speaker calibration is done with an SPL, and/or a calibration disc like Digital Video Essentials, and provided all speakers are correctly set at the same level, what is the need to adjust the center speaker volume in Trifield? Shouldn't it be already calibrated to sound at the same level as the L/R channels?

I understand the need to tweak depth, width and so on, but center channel volume? Please explain.

Also:

>(I set the EQ at full range, which prevents the "dull", rolled off sound that some people hear).<

What is the EQ full range setting for, and how it affetcs the sound? I know it goes from Flat to EQ1-3, but that's it.

And on that note, anybody know what the Rear LPF setting differences; spome of these changes are so subtle, they are difficult to pinpoint.

Cheers!!!!!

MJC,

If you adjust the center channel depth so that it is very far (obscenely) far back, you may/will find that you need to increase the center channel volume by +.5 or +1 db to make it match the L/R speakers.

I feel that out of the box, the center channel volume is actually too high (remember, just because a setting says "0" doesn't mean that it is the same signal level, or "flat", as in Direct - the high bass level in Trifield, which is set at "0", is an example of this). Does this make sense?

For instance, I used to place my center channel 5ft high on the TV. When I moved it down to the same level as the main L/R speakers, it was actually too loud. I can hear 1db changes and noticed the change in volume right away. Before the sound was shooting over my head; afterwards, it was coming directly at me. Even though the speakers and distances were calibrated in each case, Trifield was not. It is not "flat" as you might assume it to be. Trifield, out of the box, is indeed juiced up. Just compare it to Direct; you will immediately hear the volume increase. If you play with the setting options, this will make much more sense than me explaining it (poorly).

From my listening experiments, the EQ setting controls whether the high frequency information in the Trifield setting is rolled off or not. I have found when listening to any EQ setting that information was lost when compared to the "flat" EQ setting. If I had rears or sides, I would probably not use any EQ on those channels as well.

Hope that helps.

Damon

Just fiddle with Trifield untll you get the sound you want and then label it as a preset.
Why you have to adjust it? Who cares if it works.
You will be well rewarded for your efforts.

The basic settings are just that,
"Basic settings for you to build on".
So go build on them.

Enjoy, Chris.

A center speaker is made for movies not music. So it is made to enhance the dialog of a movie. The EQ setting tries to reverse that process. In my experience for Trifield to really work you must have exactly same speaker as the front and not just the center speaker in that speakers series. The Flat setting is for exactly that setup.
That's not what the EQ is for. normal center channel signal is intended to be played by a center speaker, but with Trifield, the center signal is a combination of the left and right speaker's sound. And since a sound source that originally was intended to be heard in the range of 30 deg off axis comes directly from the front, there would be a spectra shift due to our pinnae and head modifying the sound when it passes them. The EQ just tries to compensate for that so that the same signal should more or less sound the same whether coming from the center or main L&R speakers.

Bob! You big fraud! I thought Trifield was yours!
Trifield is basically trying to recreate the Ambisonic sound for the front channels. But utilizing a multi-mic'd recording as it source instead of a XYZW source.

So skip the pretender and go for the real thing. Every one of Nimbus' recording is done in Ambisonic format, which would decode on Meridian processors for full reproduction of the original recording venue. And their recordings are dirt cheap.

Now all Nimbus have to do is release recordings that I want to listen to........

Ah well....one day perhaps.

There is life in Trifield after all.

Enjoy. Chris.

I read timbre as treble.
