Hi

My 861 display all of a sudden displaying jumbled characters. Tried power off; plugged out etc without any success.

Anyone has any ideas?

Many thanks for your help.

You could try reseating the display board.

Don't remove the screws of death.

Seriously, there are a couple of screws on the sides of an 861 which hold the top card guide rail in place. I removed them and I've never spent the time to put everything back together properly.

There are usually detailed instructions for such things that a friendly dealer should be able to get for you. Anyone that did v6 or v8 upgrades will have had something that in words and pictures explained exactly how to get the case opened up safely.

First thing would be to retype the 861. If this does not help try reflashing the firmware. If neither of these procedures helps you will need to dig further.

You will remove the hex head bolts that hold the case on, there are 4 each side for a total of eight. Pull the case straight back while keeping it elevated at the level is was before the bolts were removed.

Once the outer case has been removed, the top cover is next. The are a number of small screw at the top of each side that hold the inner top cover on. They are all the same size. Do not remove the larger headed screws. Some 800 series units have a couple of small screws in the top as well. Then gently work the top cover up and off.

Check that the ribbon cable is properly seated on the C00 card and the front display. If for any reason you intend to disconnect the ribbon cable, take a photo of how it is oriented before doing so. The connection is not keyed and it is very easy to invert the connection. Doing so will result in destroying the front display.

Reseat the C00 card by removing the top and bottom Torx screws holding it in the card frame along with the ones that fit between the C00 and the adjacent cards. Pull the card out just enough to disconnect it from the backplane and plug it back in then replace the screws.

Try powering the unit back on and test before reassembling in reverse order. If none of these steps helps, you have a bad display board or a bad C00 card. Both are pretty rare.
