It’s disingenuous to state that the value of Roon only costs $10 per month, since to get the best out of Roon requires a Tidal subscription at an additional $20 per month.
Roon doesn't cost anything extra to get the best out of your music collection - it does take a bit of time to Rip that collection but, with a thousand or more albums, Roon will add value to that collection making it more accessible and highlight unique links and similarities between tracks, albums, composers and artists et al. The more content you have, the more it can make of those links.
If you have a music collection consisting of one Genesis album, and it says that it's similar to Yes or King Crimson, or that band members Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford et al, who all had other careers outside Genesis, then the more access to have to that alternative content, the more opportunity you will have to explore those links.
What Tidal, Qobuz, internet radio et al bring to that party, is additional content over and above your own music collection. Whether you spend £20 a month on a couple of albums, or £20 (or whatever you pay) a month on being given access to thousands of albums, or spend nothing, the choice is yours. Roon will make the best experience of whatever music content it has available to it, the bigger the music content you have available, the bigger that journey will be.

When purchased in the UK, both Audirvana and Amarra add 20% VAT to their advertised price. It’s not until one gets to the final payment page that this otherwise hidden cost is made known.
Genuine question: if Roon similarly adds local taxation to their advertised price, this makes Roon Lifetime significantly more expensive. If they don’t add local sales tax to their price, how do they get away with not adding this extra cost to their customers?
That is, rather than paying £550 ($699), the true cost is £660. No?

Pretty upset about this as I was going to get roon lifetime but couldn’t afford it immediately after saving up for my 5200.2 speakers !. Downloaded the 30 day trial two months ago and decided to hold off for it whilst saving up now I’ve got these lovely speakers and can’t afford the 699 US. Wish Roon had emailed saying price increase imminent I would have borrowed the money to get the lifetime offer.
From my perspective, the price increase isn't that bad. Roon hadn't increased their lifetime subscription cost since it was launched over 4 years ago - if we only adjusted for inflation, it should be a good $60 or so more. So, taking inflation into account, maybe about a $130 real increase.
The product today is much more refined and has many more features than it did at launch. I understand it's frustrating when companies increase prices of products, but I don't think Roon's decision making here is different to almost all other commercial entities.
I don't see the lifetime subscription remaining available for much longer (as Roon have more or less said themselves.) For those who really don't like the subscription model and are convinced by Roon, I'd encourage you to act in the next few months - the sooner the better. I suspect we'll have numerous expressions of frustration when the lifetime subscription is finally grandfathered - don't be one of those people!
DOI: I swapped over to Roon a little under a year ago and did buy a lifetime sub. Even if I hadn't, I'd consider the increased cost of the lifetime subscription decent value for what we get.

You could become an audio dealer who also sells Roon hardware and subscription services. Only costs a quarter million that way 😀😜.

I get regular emails from roon , even got one saying the 1.7 was coming out two days since. But no email saying if you want to take up the 499 lifetime offer you have 48 hours left !, that to me would have been nice than finding out today that’s it’s now 699. I actually ain’t online here at home and use 4g only on my mobile phone to read emails etc etc.would have been great though to have some warning of pending price rise?, then I could have either subscribed there and then or not.
Maybe Roon Labs will do a Black Friday 24 hour offer of the 499 for new full subscribers who currently ain’t in the trial that would be great but I doubt it will happen.
