Pieter dVR, Thanks I’ve read that earlier, missed out but that’s life I guess. Good for those who took a trial out before Thursday!!
Looking at it from a financial standpoint paying 699 equates to 6 years approx to get your full value out of it which is a very long time in Audio terms!, who knows what will happen in 6 years. This surely will push people away from lifetime subscription and into annual. Which is what I’ll have to do I guess now as I’m not getting any younger and 6 years is a long time. Will Roon be around then, what will it be if it is and what will the competition come up with?, No one knows I feel they should have just stopped the long term payment rather than up the price of it.
$200 is a lot of cash (to me) for the same thing as you could of got taking out the trial earlier in the week. Don’t get me wrong Roon is superb when I was on the trial the updates let me know about shows that I would never have been able to find out about it was tremendous.

On the first point about a six year payback term I agree, and it’s a gamble I’m glad I don’t have to make. As for the second point, that is indeed the intention as they clearly state for the long term viability for all. And to be honest, if I hadn’t had the foresight to be one of the first adopters in 2015 (£295 for my lifetime sub at the time - yes, how smug am I ) I’d choose the annual sub now - and quite happily so, based on the last four years.

The audio hobby and music is all about the experience. You either enjoy it now or wish that you had later on. For me, to look at it as a return on investment is kind of short sighted as you will miss out on the enjoyment aspect. If you are concerned as to whether or not Roon will last simply go with the yearly plan. For ten bucks a month you get an excellent way to categorize, sort, and search your music library that is cheap as chips in my opinion. Roon is very reasonable for all the enjoyment it adds to the musical pleasure without having to handle physical media.

I personally have known about Roon for only around 8 months and that was in conversation with a fellow hifi enthusiast I probably wouldn’t have known about it now if it wasn’t for that conversation! I actually thought back then that Roon was a piece of equipment you bought like the old Vortexbox and the price of the “Roon” kit was way out of my league to be honest.
Anyways I subscribed to the mailing list and have had regular mails from Roon labs advising on upgrades etc. culminating in the 1.7 teaser that was sent two days ago. I appreciate how great Roon is I’ve only ever used it for the 30 day trial and decided that I couldn’t afford it at that stage so left it as is. As I was on a mailing list it would have been great if Roon had of at least alerted me to this sudden imminent price increase then I could have either took out a lifetime or not.
Even something saying you have 48 hours to take up the lifetime offer at 499 then it’s gone for good would have been fairer I feel, why keep it on at 699 at all. But an alert would have been nice. I get regular emails from the cheaper audiophile softwares that say 20% off or half price for a limited time, I don’t see why Roon couldn’t offer a short term window of opportunity?. Once it’s gone it’s gone tempting offer, I feel loads of people would have took up lifetime in such a scenario of that was the case.
Fair comment but no one could guess if such an offer was happening how many people would jump on it?. Surely if 1000 people subscribed for lifetime in this “window of opportunity “, and weekly annual subscriptions stayed constant it would be a win win for Roon as a company?. This is only my thoughts obviously.
I know my friend who took out annual in October and is just past the 30 day cut off feels upset beyond belief!, he would be an OAP before getting into positive territory of subscription if he took out lifetime now so is sticking with annual. The thing about lifetime which was tempting I feel is you know you have it and if finances get tough you don’t have to worry about finding £100 in 12 months.
I am 70+ and took the lifetime subscription for myself and resident family. I look forwards not backwards and live by my decisions. We will all be a long time dead. Hector

What if lifetime had increased to a $1000 would people happily pay then?, and what if annual goes up to $150 in 6 months. All hypothetical I know but people would surely have a ceiling for such a program?
Obviously I’d like to own it myself and I feel I’m missing out but I’m put off by both financial considerations now sadly... although I may do a year subscription at some stage and see how it goes for me.
Current price is £543 ($699) for a lifetime, you delayed buying the lifetime and missed out on the £388 ($499) previous price but there is no use crying over spilt milk, if you fear it may go up to $1000 then I would buy now and not delay.
Only you can decide if it is good value to you, If I was you I would buy now along with a nice bottle of wine and enjoy both as I am sure you would, distilling everything down to its monetary value alone often misses the real value of the product.
