Just noticed that the Roon Lifetime License has increased from $499 to $699.

Annual License remains at $119.

I heard that Roon lifetime license was too cheap to be sustainable. So hopefully this will fix that.

Danny from Roon posted his thoughts on pricing on the Roon forum, Lifetime price increase, $499 -> $699 I have also quoted it below.

We’ve been getting questions about the lifetime price increase, and if people can still get the old pricing. Let me explain what we are willing to offer and why.

Old pricing

We are willing to extend the old pricing to:

Trial subscriptions that were started before the price increase, as long as you are still in trial. After your trial expires, the new pricing will apply.
Annual subscriptions that began before the price increase but are 30 days or less into the annual. If you are more than 30 days into your annual, the new pricing will apply.
If you qualify, please contact us via email: contact [at] roonlabs.com 18 – they will take care of you. Make sure you have your credit card on file at https://roonlabs.com/account.html 12

Why the price increase?

We initially offered the lifetime for early commitment, not so people could rent-to-own. The goal was to bring forward 4-5 years of revenue so we could fund the start of the company. It worked. We never raised external funding.

However, as we keep expanding the product and the team, paying for new data sources, and increasing our per-user costs (particularly those that recur monthly or annually), the lifetime subscription is not healthy for our future. It never was healthy; it was just a way to feed our hungry business early on.

Since those early days, we have grown considerably. Cash flow is more predictable, and we are investing in longer-term projects; the lifetime continues to be the “junk food” of our revenue stream. Tasty for sure, but not healthy.

What Roon needs now is a regular and dependable revenue stream for business sustainability and ongoing product development; we get that with annual subscriptions, not lifetimes.

Many times over the last few years, we’ve discussed eliminating the lifetime option. While this would serve the goal of “getting off the junk food,” it would be very disruptive to both our day-to-day cash flow and to our resellers, who often bundle lifetime subscriptions with premium hardware purchases.

Our solution was to increase the price of a lifetime. It gradually weans us off the junk food. Some of you won’t care about the price increase and will continue to buy the lifetime. Some will find the price too steep and go with the annual instead. A few of you will be so offended you leave us entirely. That’s an unfortunate reaction, for us and for you!

Why leave out current annual subscribers from old pricing? Why no advance notice?

Let’s imagine we sent out a price increase notice, what would happen? Well, we have some experience with this.

When we first launched the product back in May 2015, we were offering the lifetime at a “introductory discount” of 10% off, $450. In October of 2015, we sent out a notice that stated: “hey everyone, next week the price is going up!” The result was monumental and completely unexpected. We made more revenue in October than we made in all of 2015. Wow! That notice resulted in substantially funding our next year.

So, that sounds great! Who doesn’t want all that revenue upfront? Well, we don’t. It’s unhealthy for the long-term sustainability of the business. It would pull forward a significant amount of revenue and then leave us in a multi-year cash flow drought.

Notices of price increases are customarily handed out in 2 different scenarios:

When it doesn’t matter. For example, when Netflix increases its subscription price, you are being notified, but you have no choice in the matter.
When companies want your cash today, like we did in October 2015. This is the behavior of an immature or cash-starved business, and not one looking towards the future.
We did not raise the price of the annual, so this isn’t the first scenario. We are actively foregoing short term cash flow in hopes of a long and healthy future, so it isn’t the second one either.

We could have had our best sales month ever by announcing that we were doing this at the end of the month. That’s just not what we’re looking for.

That’s why we didn’t give out a notice.

If you have been with us for a year or even longer, it may sting to have lost out here, but you had ample time to convert to a lifetime. If we let everyone do this now, we’d be gorging ourselves on junk food.

$699 is too much for Roon’s lifetime subscription

It’s meant to hurt. It’s meant to reduce sales of lifetimes! If you hate it, the goal is achieved.

The lifetime should not be an end-goal for Roon subscribers, it hurts us as a company and is not a viable business model for our future.

We will eventually eliminate the lifetime entirely. If you have the cash and want the lifetime, go for it while it lasts. If you don’t, the annual is the right thing for you (and for us).

The annual is STILL $119 for a year. That’s $10 a month. If Roon isn’t worth $10 a month to you, then we are doing something wrong and you should go elsewhere. It certainly brings me more joy than $10 every month, and our business vision is to do the same for every one of our subscribers.

I'd deeply appreciate the way Roon communicates with their customer.

It’s disingenuous to state that the value of Roon only costs $10 per month, since to get the best out of Roon requires a Tidal subscription at an additional $20 per month.

Spin.

Why not include a Qobuz sub and also the price of HQPlayer and Fidelizer plus some other network cleaners and PSU’s for the NUC and some room treatments. That really helps get the best out of Roon. They know all about those too so obviously disingenuous not to mention it all.

🙄

I agree with Albert, M have been out in the cold for way too long and it really hurts their business. The constant carping about price of Roon baffles me. As Danny says, if it doesn't do it for you, move on and don't spare it another thought. People are willing to spend several lifetimes worth of Roon on their equipment but the software that gets the best out of it all (IMO) is perceived as too expensive!
I got a Lifetime Roon license and a Nucleus+ to run it all and it cost less than a 596 cost nearly 20 years ago !!!!
I also subscribe to Tidal though I rarely use it with Roon, it's my goto for mobile listening and trying new music and not necessary to have Roon at all.

Even at $699 I would have no problem recommending Roon to people. You can tell from the tone of Danny's post quoted above that these guys are serious about music (they have been at this for nearly 20 years with Sooloos originally) and they don't seem to me to be the kind of guys who are going to lose their love of music and go spend all their time on the golf course. Plus, they had the good sense to get out from under Meridian when it became obvious that M were losing their mojo and not innovating the way they once did nor communicating with their biggest fans (us!). Having met some of these guys on the HH tours (heady days ;O) ) and observed their interactions on the Roon forum I can say that this is one monthly bill that wouldn't bother me in the slightest!

$10 wouldn't buy a nice pizza, if you don't like music that much, I would think that strange, but perfectly acceptable. Enjoy what you enjoy!

I was mightily impressed with Danny's explanation of the price increase, not just his frank description of the rationale, but his willingness to spend the time to engage so fully with his customers.

I paid the annual subscription for three years to see if Roon worked out as a viable business, but then let it lapse as MQA still hadn't arrived. And for that four month period, I really missed it! I bought the lifetime and trusted that MQA decoding would eventually arrive (I reckoned £350 made more sense for my requirements than £800 for a 218) and it did, just a couple of months later.

I really like Roon, I can't think of any product over the past 40 years (my hifi journey) that's offered such flexibility for controlling and listening around the home from any and all available devices: main hifi, apple and android tablets, bluetooth speaker, android and apple phones, soundbar.

The DSP functions (and I've barely scratched the surface) appear to allow some of the old 518 functionality, which I find really useful.

Even without Tidal, I'd find it an essential purchase, and that's with a pretty small library of 1200 albums, but each to their own...

Cheers

In fact, were Meridian to introduce a notional "Global MSR" app at £350 which allowed your system to play music with every other piece of consumer electronics in your home, with almost any phone or tablet to hand able to act as a fully featured controller and end point, wouldn't you sign up?!

Cheers

I get Danny’s explanation for their preference for subscribers over lifetime members, but if I jump on the Roon bandwagon with a subscription, sell on my Sooloos hardware, and at some later date Roon goes belly up, how do I play my purchased music?

Hi,

In this topic What happens with the lifetime subscribers if the company folds or is sold? Danny has stated that if RoonLabs did fail there would be one last release that would enable the Roon application to run standalone (limited functionality to facilitate no reliance on backend services).

Speaking of backend services are you aware that Roon run all the backend services for Meridian Sooloos? Not sure how they would fare without RoonLabs ... Meridian don't have the skill set to maintain them.

Regards,
Carl
