I have a Meridian serial/SpeakerLink cable donated a while back by Meridian HQ. It is Serial/SpeakerLink only - no USB.

I am happy to put this into circulation as a 'pass the parcel' type thing for anyone wanting to undertake the very risky task of updating the firmware on their kit.

UK only.

So I was thinking.

  • Anyone who wants to borrow the cable, post their request here.
  • Whoever has the cable at that point in time (initially me) can then PM the person requesting to get their details.
  • The cable is then posted to that person, at senders expense.
  • A USB/Serial converter will likely be needed and is not included in this.
  • Receiver can then obtain firmware from third party and update their firmware as required.
  • Hold onto cable until next person requests it.

Repeat until cable gets lost...

The list here should be updated so that we know who currently has the cable. Hopefully the list will be self maintaining.

All done without warranty etc etc...

Does that sound like a plan?

I am not sure the point given the hassle of postage.

I imagine that most people already have some kind of USB-Serial solution to configure the rest of their kit. If so all they need is one of these: StarTech GC98FF DB9 to RJ45 Modular Adapter.

Got to be better than faffing around with posting cables surely?

Anthony.

I’m not sure about the point of your post

It’s there if anyone wants an official Meridian cable to do their own firmware update. If you don’t need it, no need to reply.

Or I could just send it to the tip for recycling but thought that people here would find it more useful.

No need to be so defensive.

The point was that for £1.47 including postage people can have their own adaptor to do the upgrade themselves without having to wait for one to be sent to them and then having to bag it, label it, stamp it and then carry it to a post office.

There is more than one way to skin a cat and I thought I was being helpful. Forget I bothered.

Anthony.

Don't be sorry. Nobody said it wasn't. Including me.

I think it is a kind offer indeed, and comes over and above the regular advice and help you extend to others here. An example of what makes this a rather excellent online community.

Cheers

I too think this is kind. Just good vibes.

The "very risky" part is a worry, in line with what Rick recently warned us about. Is there a foolproof guide to updating firmware, or is it potentially so risky it should always be left to an experienced dealer?

It's genuinely straight forward. My OP was being slightly sarcastic... Ask same question in main section and if anyone has suffered any lasting issues once they sussed initial setup.

The hard part is getting comms working and you will probably need a USB/serial converter that is compatible with your device as most modern kit do not have plain serial these days. I'm pretty certain that this cable does the null modem (tx/rx crossover, aka ears to mouth on a telephone) bit (it's still in the plastic bag and not tried, but it makes no sense for it not to), so one less thing to remember.

This is now on its way to Tennant

Tennant will soon be the guardian of the lead so please contact them if you want the lead.

For anyone wanting to know the cost. No cost other than £1.32 postage when paying it forward.
