When I purchased the SE upgrades for my 8K's, the (former) dealer's installer properly installed the new circuit boards and tweeters but failed to do the SW update to the new SE speakers because he wasn't supplied with the right tool (and wasted about an hour futzing around with it).

Eventually I did the SW upgrade myself using my laptop and one of Robert's Reviver adapters I owned which had a serial input. So, Yes, it is possible to do it yourself if you have the appropriate adapter and the firmware files.
