Just wondering if buying a G95 now would be a silly move?

I see quite a few users have had them fail and no way of repairing them any more.

My TV room has an Arcam Movie Solo that I put in when the G68/DSP speakers went and I moved the hifi into the lounge, and it has been great, in fact is still great.
However, I saw a G95 on eBay, thought that I would grab it as a way to get some M back in the house so spoke to the seller and then did a quick search on here and saw the horror stories, but are they just the odd unit or is it a case of if they haven't gone yet they will do soon?

I think most G series failures are down to Switch Mode Power Supplies (I've had issues with G91 and G61 and many have had issues with G68s).

As the G95 has a Linear Power Supply I'd say it's a much better bet, as I hope my new G65 is.

Thanks for the reply Neil, however I'm not sure it is that with the G95?

It seems they are failing in other ways, and there are no parts.

I don't mind the drive failing, I would never use it for spinning physical media, just want it for power 3 front speakers and a sub for watching Sky and playing a bit of music in there while making dinner and when friends are round.

I guess I would like to know from all the posters who have said they now have a brick, what failed exactly, did it still work as a little surround amp?

I didn't know this, but according to the data sheet:

On eBay, I note that a dealer is selling a 'new' G95 (very old stock).

It must be very tempting.

However, when I thought my G95 had failed, no-one was interested in even looking at it (not even Mr.Tech Guy).

My relief on solving its software issues was tainted by the sad realisation that it was time to sell it on before the electronics actually failed.

Internal photos on Duncans Info pages do show a toroidal transformer.

Not sure I would want a new one, think that could be asking for trouble, sat there for 12+ years without being used.

It seems there is a board that fails and no spares, but not sure which board and what they class a failing? By that I mean, is it you can no longer play discs, or does it mean there is no sound etc.?

I guess no one really knows?

I replaced an Arcam Solo 5.1 with a new G95 in 2010.
The G95 was so much better - CD / DVD player, pre and power amp.

Mine worked very well and never failed apart from one time when an old DVD became stuck in the loading tray.

I sold it last year (Wife’s orders to free up a room) to a chap in Australia and he is still happy with it.
At £800 odd quid and provided it works fine I think it’s a bargain.

What about a G61(r) instead? Similar form factor.

I just wanted something neat for watching TV in the front room with my old Mission 752 and 75c speakers and Rel sub.

I passed on the G95 anyway. I thought for £500 it was worth a punt, but to be fair the Arcam does everything I need, I would be better to stick the money into a power amp that can be hidden away if I feel the need for more.

£500 for a G65 was an absolute steal.

If it had been a G65 for £500 I would have bought it regardless, this was for a G95, and it was actually £550 we agreed on to be precise.
