I can see why M would be keen to get involved with such deals, they win in two ways.
Firstly they’re guaranteed a reasonable volume of ‘sales’, if they indeed are producing the hardware. How many first class seats to BA have? 700-1000 maybe? That would be a nice manufacturing run. Also they are pretty much guaranteed repeat ‘sales’ every year, headphones will break and somehow I don’t think first class passengers will be immune to un-intentionally ‘acquiring’ the headphones as they leave the flight! I could well imagine that repeat sales might account for 25%+ every year?
Of course the income from a pair of headphones is going to be minute compared to a product like an 861, but volume sales of 861’s and the like are simply never going to happen.
Secondly, placing your brand in such high profile places has got to pay dividends by generating the odd lucrative future big value sales of M equipment. It’s the same with their relationship with Jaguar & Landrover. Most people have never heard of Meridian. However if someone drives an expensive jag and likes the quality of the audio, the brand name will stick in their brain. If they are ever in the market for expensive speakers, who knows, they may well think about purchasing some nice very profitable 8K SE’s?
M have been losing money for several years. Any strategy that helps keep them going will always get my vote. Especially if it means now again they can generate enough income to fund development of a simple piece of equipment like a 218, 271 etc.
