Hello

I would like to try a 4K Bluray Player as I have no real 4K source for my TV, but I don't want to spend too much because I know I won't really use it much.

I was looking for one with a multi channel analogue output as I would like to use my centre channel as well as left right (no surrounds). I notice that only the higher end ones have this but many have a second HDMI output for audio only.

Is there any device, other than a HD722 (or HD621), to allow me to use this output to my G61RSL?

Thanks
Neil

I believe there was a Shaun Fogg mod for a device once upon a time. I can't fully remember which unit it was but I haven't seen any advertised in a very long time... I'm sure some forum members have used it though.

HD621 is a wonderful device though and very keenly priced these days!

Kind regards
David

How about just single digital coax out and letting the G6x do the work like the good old days? Or do these players not output DD/DTS any more?

It may not be discrete channels but Meridian processors were the pinnacle of this sort of thing when it was the only way.

That's probably the best idea.. simple and effective!

Kind regards

I seem to recall Ronnie saying back in the day that the DD/DTS bitstreams were of a higher bitrate, and consequently quality, from Blu Rays compared to DVDs. So it could sound better than you expect Neil.

Cheers

Thanks

Most of them have phono or optical outputs but I assumed they were stereo only. Maybe I’m wrong.

They should all output bitstream multichannel - you just won’t get the Dolby Atmos / DTS-X or Dolby True HD / DTS Master Audio soundtracks as they can only go via HDMI.

Thanks, is that the same as a TV outputs on optical?

Following up on Ian’s comment above, Look at the Sony X800 for example. You can can take the picture to the TV in 4K. Seems the digital coax output will output multichannel bitstream according to the manual pages 22 and 23. Unclear if this will be 96K high-Rez or converted to 48K.

I don’t have a 4K TV or 4K player so could very well be mistaken. Someone here should know. Will a 4K TV have a multichannel capable coax or optical output?

See S/PDIF normally there will be a menu option in settings (TV or disc player) to configure for 2ch PCM or 5.1 compressed output.

Hello

There is indeed!

My LG 4K Television allows the selection of MPEG, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, HE-AAC or "AUTO" for the optical output.

So it looks like I can just connect all my sources to the TV, that has auto sensing and switching, by HDMI and take one optical feed from the TV to my G61RSL.

I'm only planning to use three speakers anyway so should be fine.

Thanks

Neil

For stereo hi-res, I use this AV Access HDMI 2.0 Audio Extractor with SPDIF out (<$50) between my player and processor. This gets around Oppo’s defeat of SACD digital output above 48ktHz via coax or optical.

You could also add a quality PSU and/or iFi “purifier” to improve SQ.
