Suburra. Set around a shady real estate acquisition attempt in Rome that would allow the Sicilian Mafia to build port facilities that would handle the expansion of their drug supply into the city, it involves all the usual suspects - the church, local politicians and technocrats, local crime families, old order establishment figures, petty criminals in over their heads - all trying to get a piece of the action or to thwart their rivals.

It's worth paying careful attention in the first episode to who's who and what's going on, but then each subsequent episode falls neatly into place providing the perespective of each of the different characters and a different spin on what it was you thought had been going on previously. Each chapter starts with some dramatic crisis and then rewinds 24 hours to show how thing came to these (usually) unfortunate turn of events.

It would be worth watching even if it were just to show how pretty modern Rome can be made to look. That, as well as the over the top representation of local settled gypsy culture.
As always, watch in the original with subs rather than dubbed in order to keep most the flavour of the dialogue.
