I've had mixed results with VirtualBox and USB. Infact I'm struggling to remember what, if any, I got to work but it would have either been FTDI, prolific or Explorer.

Try this link if you have not already as starter. but it does relate to a Windows not OSX host.

I use VirtualBox on a daily basis, it's pretty good but not perfect and one version may work and another may not - it's normally subtle stuff though. The joys of free software.
