Have now played the 818 vs 218 for a client this morning.

System spec.

218/818
Vitus Audio SIA025.
B&W 803D3.
Chord Sarum full loom.

818 is still the reference for audio streaming. Playing initially standard audio files, the 818 gave such a massive expanse of realism.

The 818 was running balanced, taking full advantage of the monaural amplifier.

MQA - differences were there, to a degree not as pronounced when going this A/b using some SE DSPs. You can hear and understand what the 818 was offering over and above the 218.

What did the customer purchase?

Ultra DAC, Vitus Amp.

Ian

can you offer any info on how this will integrate into a 5.1 system?

Hector,

Maybe because my English isn't my first language, but I think your response to Martins Hifi is a bit offensive. Being a Meridian dealer on a consumer user forum, they are in no way obliged to supply whatever information.

If they are so kind to take the time in doing so, great! But there really is no reason to comment on them posting alternative shops (diversion, why?).

Just my humble opinion,

Hector

That's a bit unfair.

I get seriously frustrated with Meridian and their way of doing things, but don't think it is fair to hammer the dealers, who after all, probably get just as frustrated with M's way of doing things as we do.

I connected my 218 via SpeakerLink to 861. I played Fleetwood Mac in 96/24 and MQA. Could not hear any difference. I also compared 218 with ID41 as endpoint. My listening impression is that ID41 is much better.

@HermanAtHome

Please could you be a little more specific about exactly which (music) files you played, through which 'playback chain' ?

Are you using Sooloos or Roon ?

e.g. If you're using Sooloos or Roon, and you play a MQA file through the ID41, and then the same file through the 218, what's the difference ?
Can you 'stop' the 218 from decoding the MQA file, or does it always 'unfold' ?

And then I assume you play a 96/24 file through the ID41 & the 218 - which is when you feel the ID41 is noticeably better....?

Thanks !

Hello Hermann,

Can you please, also what Rolski is asking, to compare a standard CD witth 44.1/16 bit and when it's possible with ROON?

Of course all in direct or stereo mode please.

Thanks
Robert

I thought that too - way out of order!

I used Fleetwood Mac Rumours because I have this album in 16/44, 24/96 and MQA. The albums are locally stored in my MD600.

There is a difference between 16/44 and 24/96-MQA. I only played all tracks in Trifield. All albums sounded better when played via ID41. I only have a Sooloos system not Roon.

Thanks HermanAtHome,

sorry to be maybe pedantic, just to confirm:

Option 1)
MD600>>(ethernet)>>Router>>(ethernet)>>861>>(SL)>>DSP7200´s ?

Option2)
MD600>>(ethernet)>>Router>>(ethernet)>>218>>(SL)>>861>>(SL)>>DSP7200´s ?

I have had a reply from Meridian directly:

"Yes you can use the 218 on the output of the G65 to gain the ability to allow MQA decoding and no, this will not degrade the quality from the processor.

Quote
You need to take the Master SpeakerLink output from the G65, into the SpeakerLink input on the 218, then out of this onto your DSP5200’s. You will also need to configure the sources on the 218 so that everything other than Sooloos (SLS) comes in on the SpeakerLink input.
What does it mean about the 218 sources? Is this something to do with MSR+ and selecting the 218 as the source?

How does this effect the MC200 I have connected to the G65 as an input?

Do I need to make my FR the master instead of my FC still?

Why were there people in this thread describing using physical A/B network switches if the 218 has the ability to be used to do the switching for you?

Also: how does this setup mute the centre and rear speakers?
