I tried several times the Focal mega bucks cans last week. Much as I tried to like them I just didn't. So, I am officially £2500 better off this week as I went with the Sennheisers.

apologies in advance for going off topic here:

Nick - can you go Tidal MQA to Squeezebox to 5200SE = Full MQA?

Cheers
Tom

Thread about headphones again! Gosh no!!!

I'm not sure about Prime (I thought to buy it but grabbed Sennheiser hdvd 800) but good headphones on the market are:

Sennheiser HD800 (comfort|price|quality)
Audeze lcd-3 (sound!)
Grado ps1000 (superb sound)
IEM - don't buy this funky Shure crap please - only UE900s and above or JH Audio (Jerry was founder of UE brand).

My current understanding Tom is only with Roon, not LMS.

MQA and LMS

Part of this though highlighted frequency response. How important really is this to MQA? Some of the headphones suggested are <25k, but others are >40k. Had I not come read about some of the benefits of high resolution electronics with MQA, i wouldnt have been bothered, but I have and it puts doubt in my mind that lower resolution headphones would be limiting in some respect.
Be careful with specs.

For example HD800 or HD800s are down like 35dB by the time they reach 25KHz despite being rated at 44KHz.

Frequency response over 20kHz doesn't matter. Transient response does.

Hi Nick

Just wondering if you tried the Elears... I see you mention the Utopia's.... so just wondering

FWIW, I actually preferred the £800 Elear's overall to the £3,500 Utopia's... some aspects of the Utopia's were superior... but for OVERALL performance and musicality, I preferred the Elears... price not withstanding

Mind you, I also find the 800S to be superb... and I'm currently torn between the Elears and 800S... when I went in expecting the 800S to "win" hands down... and never even having heard of the Elear models beforehand

Decisions, decisions...

Ian,

I just picked up a par of in ear headphones from Audeze! Audeze iSine20 - they are by far the best in ear headphones i have tested.

They work fantastically with the Explorer2 so should be even better with the Prime.
And if you have a an iPhone7 they work with the lightning contact as well and that sounds fantastic on the go!

What properties to look out for to ensure good transient response - or probably more useful, what to avoid if i want to ensure good MQA performance?

Just ensure you have the heating turned up and the windows closed. You should avoid any risk of goosebumps interfering with your assessment of MQA.😀

If you pay a visit to High End Headphones (Hi Fi Lounge) in Bedfordshire you can have a real play around with many models.

You could just take the Prime with you.

If you go to the HiFi Lounge, just don't listen to the STAX wink
