Hi

It seems, from searching the forum, that this is the recommended replacement power supply for the G91 and other G series processors

40 watt supply

but they also stock another one

60 watt supply

It is exactly the same physical size.

Would the larger capacity be of any benefit? Run cooler? Last longer?

From those two Farneil link, these two device share the same Tech Spec PDF's and the dimensions are the same.

WelwynNick, is probably the best guy on here to comment on your other questions, but I believe for a given loading the larger supplies tend to run cooler.

Seems I can't resist any discussion on power supplies...

I doubt there will be very much difference between them, but since there's only �11 in price, I'd go for the 60W supply.

Heat dissipation and operating temp aren't much of an issue for these supplies, and the "bigger" supply seems to have the same heat-sinking. If you have a look at the de-rating curves in the data sheet, you can see that when dissipation becomes the limiting factor, the 60W doesn't really have any more capacity than the 40W. This probably won't be an issue in a G91, but it does suggest that the thermal resistance of the heat sinks is the same, and the 60W won't run any cooler in the same conditions.

Performance and reliability are more likely to be the benefit of the 60W. That will be less stressed at any given load level, so the components will last longer. I'd expect ripple and noise to be lower as well. PSU's generally perform worst at their rated levels, and improve significantly at lower loads, up to a point. I think that would give the advantage to the 60W supply. I read the data sheets quite thoroughly a year ago, and after a quick refresh I think they're both suitable, but I'd make sure there were no functional differences between them.

Fitted the 60W power supply into my G91 today. Slightly different positions of input, output and earth sockets meant that I had to do some minor alterations to the apertures in the steel cover.

Other than that it was plug and play, even avoided soldering the earth lead by fitting a slide on clip.

Works perfectly now and responds to remote well.

All in cost about 50 pounds so I'm well pleased.

Thanks to this thread I also successfully replaced my G91 power supply with the ECM60UT31 and am back in business. The failed unit was an ECM40UT31 which had been in there for at least 2 years (and had probably already been changed once already). Hoping for greater longevity from the replacement!

Don't forget that the XP Power supplies have a 3 year guarantee. I have had to call on this and it was readily honoured - though I was able to take the faulty unit to XP Power's head office in the UK where they tested it on their special rig and immediately provided a replacement (I lived nearby).

With SMPS it is not always better to buy a higher wattage version. They are less efficient when not fully loaded and may actually generate more heat.

Because these supplies are inexpensive I always keep a spare or two to allow a quick replacement. Sometimes they last very well, but for no obvious reasons (except latent manufacturing shortcomings) they sometimes do not.

Just had my supply go out. The voltage was drifting. When cold, I could max out 5V line to 5.2. After it warmed up it sagged to under 5V. New supply on the way. The supply in mine is a Skynet SNP-Z061. Ordered from Sager Electronics for $60.
